Review: Bad Boys II (2003)

when it was announced that they were making a sequel to one of the best action movies of the 90s, most of us were hopefully that the on-screen chemistry between will smith and martin lawrence (who both have had pretty week films since) would be intact, and bring us a quality summer blast.

first things first.. the camera work in this movie just screams out "big budget". there's so much slickness and style, it comes off more of a 2hour music video than a sequel movie. when it comes down to it, most sequels are trashy cash-ins on the original movies, but when the original is a linear plot driven rollercoaster anyway, whats the harm?

at 150min long, Bad Boys 2 is certainly a lot longer than your average braindead action film. and at the end of the day, it IS a no-brainer, but its pulled off so well it's certainly at the top of the pile of this years action releases so far. and also the third giant car chase to grace our prescence this year, and again another one keeping us at the edge of our seats. the plot is of course, no different to anything we expect. based around cuban drug dealers (now THERE'S originality!) the team of lawrence and smith spend the whole movie trying to pin evidence on him to bring him down. nothing complex, and basically an excuse for several huge action sequences with more gunfire than you would believe possible.

the one thing that stood out about the first film, was its ending sequence. probably one of the best chases of the 90s with brilliant cinematography. unfortunately whilst the end sequence of the sequel is full of action and explosions, it doesn't QUITE meet the expectations of the original, but still ends on the expected comedy high note, which is nothing to complain about.

a short review, because it doesn't really need much more. if you like big action blasts and like me are tired of brain dead "acting" by vin diesel, you liked the original bad boys and are yearning for the constant bickering between marcus and mike, then this is the film for you. its long, but its packed with action and comedy, and thats what we were all expecting. time to grab the popcorn and enjoy the ride

quote of the movie "dan marino should definitely buy this car. not this one tho, im gonna fuck this one up."

8/10.. now to see how S.W.A.T. compares.....

U think its worth a trip to cinema?

S.W.A.T looks class too but the trailer does give alot of the plot away

yeah i think it would be fun on the big screen. i had to review from a print, cos the studio don't want british people to see the film for another 8 years (few months), so i'll probably go see it too. depends on what else is out really.. and what you've already seen.

i think big blockbusters are great on the big screen, whereas i probably wouldn't go see a courtroom drama (whilst i like watching em on tv)

Too bad you didn't get to see it at the theaters yet. I haven't watched it on the tv/computer, but I can imagine it'd be about a billion times better at the theaters
I loved this fim, for the reasons you specified.

yeah, the centropy print has had an deflicker filter placed on it, so you get those brightness problems plus the action is VERY fast paced at times, so it was hard to work out exactly what was going on. i was gonna see it in the theater anyway, and i still will be, so they've lost no money from me,.. the only thing lost is my damn patience.

I agree with this review 100%. I too am going to watch this in the theatre ... just as soon as I watch PotC in the theatre.
