Thumbs down Review: Underworld

Spoilers, as usual

I hate reviewing movies like this, because I was left disappointed, but I'm not taking any pleasure in pissing on it, anyway here goes...

The plot is basic, an underground war is being fought, lycans vs vampires. I suppose you could say the vamps are the good guys, but there aren't any heroes in this, unless you count the delicious Kate Beckinsale (her leather clad ass was the only thing that kept me in the theater), who does the right thing, but still remains pretty dark.

The film has plusses, the cinematography is top notch, the acting is as good as can be for a movie like this, and I do dig the idea of the plot, but the directing is off. I think you're supposed to care for one side for this kind of thing to work, and I really couldn't care less who got killed, I just wanted the deaths to be violent, and that was where I was deceived again. While the film scored an 18A here in Ontario, the violence is VERY weak (how many times did we get a death scene where you see a lycan open its mouth and lunge towards the camera, only to cut to another scene? Christ, at least show me a FLASH of a head being eaten or something), not to mention cliched (the final death where half the head is cut off and you're not sure it has happened until half of it slides off has been shamelessly stolen from Taye Diggs' death scene in Equilibrium (an infinately better action film I might add).
If you want to see this movie, watch the trailer. It makes the movie look very hip, uses a lot of the great camera shots from various parts, has cool music, and you see most of the better closeups on Kate's ass. 2 minutes of cool vs 2 hours of boredom disguised as the next Blade or Matrix or Crow. You decide.

3/10

,

Good review...I would rate the movie a bit higher but it still wasnt very good. The soundtrack is really good though :P I thought the movie was entertaining at least but it didnt hold my interest the whole time, The ending scene with the guy getting cut in half made me laugh though...That thing was also in the movie "Ichi The Killer" but it was used for a comedic term which is good since it looks so incredibly cheesy and poorly down in all three of these films =/
