Review: Blue Car (2001)

Review: Blue Car (2001) by Edith Piaf and the Gosport Community Centre Pensioners Club.

Indie movies are great, and with the whole screener debacle hitting Hollywood at the present time, it'll be a great loss when folk who used to receive them will miss out on movies such as like this there. Hollywood mainstream for the most part sucks ass. We all know that (or at least anyone over 18 will). So it is with great pride i can safely say yet another indie movie has come along and knocked the mainstream for six.

Blue Car follows the life of troubled teenager Meg (played by the seriously-fucking-hot Agnes Bruckner) as she deals with an uncaring mother (Margaret Colin) and mentally ill sister Lily (Regan Arnold). Meg has a great talent for poetry; when her teacher recognizes this, he decides to help her delve deeper in to her talent with extra study and enters her in to a competition to win a college scholarship at a competition in Florida. Meg is from a poor home, her father left her mother, her mother doesn't care about her and the pressures of looking after her sister are constantly building up. Desperate for a friend, she confides in her teacher and seeks solice in his advice.

For a movie made with such a low budget and such a limited amount of exposure, i am disappointed that, although the movie is fantastic, it will inevitably be overshadowed by many many other movies. The acting was fantastic, special praise is due to Agnes Bruckner as Meg who turns in an incredible performance for such a young talent. Likewise to the even younger Regan Arnold who has an equally difficult role to play in the movie. The camerawork is distinctly shoestring, with most of it handheld, giving it the now popular and accustomed 'docu-grit' (my own term lol) feel. The soundtrack in particular was rather nice with a distinctly indie feel (think Red House Painters in Excess Baggage and your sorta there). In essence a brilliant melting pot of features that culminate together to form a fantastic movie.

Blue Car is a demanding movie, in that it is slow paced and for some folk, maybe a little difficult to settle in to. This is a minor niggle (not for myself i personally loved it) but if you percevier you will be well rewarded with the excellence Blue Car has to offer.

A fantastic movie that is well acted and well brought together by a skilled director. You MUST check this one out, but for some, make sure you are in the right mood to watch it first!
