you are correct, samples are there for judging the quality of the respective releases, but since samples are so small and comprise only a small portion of the movie, it's not a very good way to judge the quality of the release. Basically, there are four ways:
step 1) look at the jpg sample,
step 2) download the mpeg sample,
step 3) read what people on the forum have to say
or
step 4) download the whole release.
If you come here and start judging on the basis of the mpeg sample (some people even do it on the basis of the jpg sample!) then you basically just repeat steps 1/2.
And besides, how do you know what the quality of the release is just by looking at the sample? do you really think the releasers will give you the worst part in the sample? the part, where there is laughter in the audience or when they fix the camcoder for a minite, or when somebody gets up and one sees just some guy's back instead of the movie? No, you can't see that in the sample.
Downloading the sample is easy, but the gain from such action is questionable. So people who want a more objective opinion come here and read what people have to say, who've watched the whole release. But if somebody comes and posts here his judgement on the basis of the mpeg sample, then people get confused, cause obviously your impression will be always better, since the sample is always better quality than the entire release.
and second, how you know FTF gets their releases from pirated vhs/dvds? You know, I read much about this on this forum, basically EVERY single group has been accused of getting their releases from pirated dvds instead of camcoding themselves. So where's the truth? Have the FTF guys told you that they buy pirated dvds for their releases? I doubt so. People who claim such things usually know nothing, you just invent this to present yourself as an insider. Look at me, I've got connections to the release groups! pfff.
