I recently got a movie that the ar was messed up on. The people are stretched, and I wanted to see if I could re-encode the video to make it look better. I've read many posts where this was a problem with video, and others who say just re-encode with TMPGEnc. So I downloaded TMPGEnc, and now I'm at a complete loss. I've looked for tutorials on how to use it, but still can't figure out how to do what I want to do.

The video that I want to re-encode is from an SVCD. So I'm imaging that it's MPEG2. I changed the settings on TMPGEnc to "MPEG-2 640x480 29.97fps CBR 1150kbps, Layer-2 44100Hz 192kbps" which (I think) is what the input video is. Every time I try to load the AVSEQ01.mpg file it says "File "...\AVSEQ01.mpg can not open, or unsupported." I know that I'm very ignorant when it comes to how video is encoded, and how the process works, but I would really like to learn how to do this.

Please help if you can.

TMPGenc doesn't open MPEG2 files on its own, so to speak. There are a few different options.

Use VirtualDubMod, AVIsynth, or DVD2AVI to frame serve the MPEG2 file TMPGenc, or install an MPEG2 codec, and you can load the files directly into TMPGenc.

Don't encode to 640 x 480. That's not a format supported by anything. What do you intend to do with the re-encoded file? SVCD will by nature give you tall stretched images if not played back in the correct aspect ratio, but it should look fine on a DVD player.

I watched this SVCD on my DVD player last night, and it was stretched. I would like to burn the fixed mpg to SVCD again to watch it on my dvd player. I will try to get DVD2AVI and see what I can do with that.

If it looked tall and stretched on your TV, you've probably got an anamorphic release, then.

You could either crop it to the correct 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio, or you could add top and bottom borders to letterbox it. Then you re-encode it to 480 x 480, which is SVCD resolution.

This is assuming it's anamorphic, of course, and not just some oddly butchered screw-up encode.
