Why avi files?

Hi everyone,

This is something that I have been wondering about for a while now but still haven't found the answer... why are avi files the most popular, most available and used files?
I usually get an avi file, then run it through TMPGenc Xpress to make it an mpg file and then either burn it onto a VCD or make from a few files a DVD with TMPGenc DVD Author.
So I was really wondering why do people offer avi files? Why not encode them already and them make the mpg file available, so that everyone else saves the encoding time? Or is there an easier or a different way to deal with avi files, less time consuming?
I am not trying to have it the easy way and get everything ready on my plate, it is just something that I would really like to know... as I have a feeling that there is something that I don't know and spend hours and hours encoding...
Thank you, I appreciate it!

Admin?

If you download the "proper" releases they ARE encoded as (s)VCD... I presume your source only provides xvid re-encodes - damn!

People offer avi file because ...

  • You can hold more movies on a disk with limited storage.
  • There ARE DVD players that play them (I know I have one)
  • As long as they are not re-encodes of releases they are know to have exceptional quality.
  • Uh.... Not everyone want's mpeg-1 or 2.

Easiest way to deal with avi files, to make it less time consuming is to ...

  1. Watch it on the computer.
  2. Get a DVD player that plays them.
  3. Use a TV-Out from you PC (should your graphic card support it)

Avi files are used in some cases because they are smaller thus faster to download. If the avi file is original then it can very good quality. If its a crappy re- encode its not worth downloading as the source loses some quality every time its encoded. The only reason I can think of that people download these files, is that they have slow connections and small download limits. This is probably why movie rapists like TMD are so popular. My advice to you is to find another source so you can download the real deal and not some re-encoded crap.My download limit is 16 gb a month but the way I see it is, its better to download a few gems than a pile of shite.

pjeer?

mpeg4 encoding has progressed, whereas mpeg1/2 hasn't. simple as that. also: there's not more mpeg4 files, just you're seeing more. don't bitch because of your limited access.

fact of the day: avi is just a wrapper, could contain ANY kind of audio/video interleave. hence its name.

i thought its simply because of xvid (or divx, as a few rips sometimes still are) - you get far better quality in relation to size, compared to any other rip (dvdr obviously not counting) so thats why avi
