Ive been using tmgenc to convert my mpgs to mp2 and m2v for dvd use. I do most of my encoding at the slowest setting to maintain quality but I was wondering if there are any others apps that do the encoding faster but still maintain a similar quality. Thx in advance!!

lots of people like cinema craft encoder(cce) lots faster...however forget being able to color correction etc unless your willing to learn avi synth scripts...

i'm another that's loyal to tmpg.

you may want to check out tmpg dvd source creator.sort of like tmpg plus but with fewer options.(but you can still fix cropping.do color corrections etc)

but it works well for converting an avi/xvid into a dvd.


you also may want to check out main concept. some people think this is as good/almost as good as tmpg(or maybe they just got tired of waiting.ha ha)

and at it's standard default settings doing a single pass mode on a 700mb file to 4gb mv2 it's speed is about as fast a nero/win avi.

i think tmpg/cce are perceived as being the best for quality. i'm sure there are some lesser known apps that my be as good. and maybe the vcd mavens will clue us in to those !

procoder by canopus,better faster etc,stick with high speed on procoder coverts great,wiyh my 3.2 its conert a typical 2 disc in 2hours 30 minutes

Are u guys kidding? Why the fuck do you want to re-encode mpeg to mpeg ????? (m2v is mpeg!)

If you got an mpeg2 video (like svcd) and u want to split the audio and the video DEMUX it, dont re-encode.

TMPGEnc has a demux tool if i remember alrigth (File -> Mpeg tools -> Simple Demux).

If you then want to join 2 mpeg files use something to join, and not something to re-encode (sounds fucking simple to me, use tools for what they are meanth for, not for foolish workarounds).

To join mpeg files u can use DVTool (thats what i use if i need to).

If for some reason u need to re-mux audio and video (u can also use DVTool to weld 2 mpeg files together including the audio if im right) use TMPGenc simple mux.

For MPEG2 encoding, you really can't beat CCE....

For MPEG1, I would say that TMPGEnc is better.

For DV footage, Canopus is the best.

Of course this is all just my opinion.

I'm going to jump on the CCE w/ AVISynth boat here. Can find tutorials on the net for this duo. AVISynth also allows you to preview your encode in a media player, BEFORE encoding it.

If I just do a simple 2 passes in CCE it takes about 2-3 hours, and the quality is always better than 5-6 hour TMPGenc.

i use TMPGEnc for quality, or VSO DivxToDV D for speed. it takes around 1 hour and quality is pretty sweet!
