Too bad... XPDVD usually does top notch work, and granted DTS is not a bad choice on this movie. But the cost is too high IMO. I guess "Quality #1" isn't there main motto anymore. Without the DTS and the DC, it would have hit 4000kbit/sec (DTS = 768kbit/sec and DC is 192kbit/sec). Which is a 32% quality increase approximately.

I'll personally wait for a better release myself. Maybe there will be a non-DTS release. Who knows...

Of course DTS fans will be happy, so snatch it up while it's hot.

DTS = something along the lines of Digital Theatre Sound, and is similar to DD 5.1, but has a better sound mix, dynamic range, and bloated file size. I personally love it compared to 5.1 as i have a 12 speaker setup, and you notice a huge improvement, especially horror films and things like the beginning of saving private ryan.* As for scene releases, the 5.1 track is usually preferred as its more compatible and smaller sized.

*Like porco said though, on a long movie the DTS track can be too big and the video bitrate will suffer, such as the case here. (at least on my BIG tv )

Well ... checked out the sample.. not to bad... but .. damn .. isnt the bitrate below scene standard ? ... 3050k sucks ass...they should have atleast removed the DC and English 5.1 and kept the DTS ... but oh well... hope someone iNT this release....

Yeah, DTS is a great thing to have on something like this, but not with the DC and AC3, DTS releases should be DTS only, no need for a Dolby track, well suppose there is as without a DTS decoder, all you get is silence, so no ideal DVD5 release is possible.

Personally im sticking with this one as a film like this need sound quality over video quality.

Man all I can say is ditto. This has to be the worse job ever done by XPDVD. I hope this isnt gonan be there new standard cause they will join 1 clickers in my book. If bitrate was over 4000 or near 4000 with DTS would be ok but 3050 to just keep DTS

I have to join the chorus of people who say it's not worth keeping the DTS audio if the video bitrate gets shot to hell in the process.
In most cases, DTS takes up too much space on a dvd5. Of course, there's the option of a DTS only release.

I'm not a big Johnny Cash fan, nor country music for that matter. Shit, I'll probably never even watch this film.

But being that it IS a MUSIC / Drama flick. I suppose DTS is ok, though I like DTS for like sci-fi. I guess I'm kinda neutral on this call. I didn't see any flaws skimming through it.

Finally got around to watching this release....

It sounds good, i can say that without a problem. However, on my 42" HD set, it does not look too great; especially in the darker scenes. Gonna have to scrounge up a dvd9 release(if there is one) and do it myself

I think it looks good enough and the sound more than makes up for it. The DTS is fakin' amazing for this movie , props XPD.

Video - 8/10 - video looked amazing. I couldn't believe that it was encoded at 3,000kbps I was expecting the video to look like shit on my 42".
Audio - 10/10 - don't have DTS on my player but 5.1 sounded awesome
Movie - 7/10 - can't be this movie on acting, amazing. Longer movie but it was worth a view or two.


The DTS could have been ripped and had it have a higher bit rate, but they pulled it off as the video didn't have a bad spot. Menu was edited which is a good thing, I think at least. Great release by XPDVD.

No technical problems here even though the transfer rate measured a constant 2800kb/s on my stand-alone Pioneer, even during the end credit sequence. Everything worked as it should and I can't see much advantage in having a DVD-9 version.

The DTS soundtrack was a disappointment in that it only really came alive during the music sequences. Artistically the film sucks but then I've never seen the point of these psuedo documentaries so would never have bought it in the first place.
