Noticed Something on Ken Rudolph's Page..

Of course one of my daily web stops is ken rudolph's page to see exactly what DVDSCR's are being sent out so we can know what to expect (btw, thanks -HLS for kicking of screener season) and I noticed these two screeners listed

11/13 VOLVER - DVE
11/27 THE ILLUSIONIST - DVE

At first I thought the DVE was a typo till I noticed twice and thought it must be some new type of screener last year he noted CiNEA DVDS, but i have no idea what a DVE is, anyone?

At a guess: it's the new wave of screeners that require a hardware solution for them to be viewed. So, a company that handles screeners for the major studios sends out a DVD player to the member who will then receive a DVD that will only play in that specific machine. Additionally, should the receipient attempt to record the stream then data will be stored that tracks the specific machine/copy that the stream came from. It's obviously decimated the screeners available:

- Volver.LiMiTED.DVDRip.XviD-BABiES (dl subs elsewhere, the included ones are shite)

- The.Illusionist.TELECINE.PROPER.READ.NFO.XViD-PUKKA (highly recommend this movie. ending is a little cheesey, but everything up to it is enjoyable.)

Those two releases did come to mind but didn't know if the DVE screener was there source, especially the -PuKKA release since most of their sources are R5 TCs/UNMASTERED DVDs. But can't wait to see how this will effect the screener season, glad to see running with scissors was just sent out on a plain ole dvd, hopefully someone picks it up soon.

Had been wanting to see the illusionist really bad, so thanks for the tip.

Sorry for the confusion...DVE was a typo and I've corrected it on my web site. These were both plain old DVDs. Anyway, it's nice to see that somebody is paying attention more than I am!

Interesting thing about that. My original Cinea DVD player that was sent out never quite worked right. The remote was "sticky" (i.e. the buttons needed extra pressure to do anything) and it didn't play DVD-Rs consistently. Finally this season it just stopped playing any of the new screeners at all (it still played some old screeners, so it was a strange bug.) I contacted Cinea (which is a division of Panavision, I think, but has a separate 888 phone number) and within 4 days they shipped me out a free replacement which now works perfectly. Not that I need it particularly, as none of this year's screeners seem to be encoded with their system - and actually I don't watch any of these screeners to begin with since I'm lucky enough to be able to catch all the films on the big screen.

Whether or not their system is DOA, they still are supporting their free players; and I'm rooting for them to succeed despite the odds against them (I fear that most Academy members are technophobes and probably haven't even set up their machines.)

Yes, yes, I know, everybody here is probably dead set against any sort of proprietary encription of DVDs. And truly I loathe the concept of regional coding (true to the spirit of the MPAA, the Cinea players don't play any non-region 1 DVDs which is reason enough to despise them.)

By the way, my screener list is at:

Ken thanks for stopping by and clearing up the typos and also for shedding a little light on the CiNEA solution.

As I also check your film journal I notice that you get to see almost everything on the big screen which must be great, I happen to live in West Virginia and we have no access to most of the LIMITED releases other than our film fest which is in late march and only runs for two days, so as impatient as I am I usually watch the screeners.

And I too root for CiNEA to succeed, I believe everyone has the right to protect their intellectual property in fact I think it is their duty to protect it and not to go after people who have circumvented it, it is their job to make it better. I loathe the MPAA though and hollywood for consistently pumping out a bunch of crap movies, when their are so many brilliant films out there that many wont get to see simply because hollywood execs won't back em. Anyway thanks again for keep us a breast of what is what

OK. This movie is currently unwatchable it is encrypted with
Cinea encryption protection. Several Award screeners this year
are protected with this method, and next year, far more will be!
Currently there is no crack to bypass this protection - we have
tried and failed. The purpose of this release is to get a sample
out there, so that talented crackers can try and help us on our
quest. There is no choice, this release must be spread; the
alternative is a future without award screeners. Next year more
than 75% of Academy and Globe screeners will apprx be using this
protection scheme, and nearly all the year after. Raw unplayed
Cinea dvds are not watermarked, it is the player that adds a
watermark
Crackers heed our call! the call
GET THIS MOTHERFUCKING PROTECTION OFF OUR MOTHERFUCKING RELEASES!
In Dec. HD DVD protection was broken, a milestone to which we give
our praise: here is the next challenge. Crackers,if you want your

Not sure if any1 will be able to crack it. Surely some Cinea Hardware will be needed. Theres some clever fucks out there though so my fingers are crossed.

I'm thinking something like this would be needed, or a close copy of one.

There was a CiNEA encoded copy of Narnia sent out; but i think i remeber something about the CiNEA pal players not working and they had to send out seperate non CiNEA encoded copies of lots of screeners.

I thought the Narnia screener was just captured via analog. I remember it was definitely not full dvd screener quality.
