Seems like a nice release, although this movie really deserves a purchase of the retail DVD or even better, the HD-DVD if/when it comes out.

[...] The grain in the sample .vob seems to be fine because if you watch other parts of the movie, there is less grain and it seems to be simply on zoomed-out objects/faces in certain scenes because of the re-encoded lower bitrate. I'm guessing the CCE algorithm compensates for zoomed-in/detailed objects/scenes by lowering detail/quality in more busy scenes with zoomed-out people, faces and objects (thus grain and blur). Unless another group comes along and propers or someone provides proof, this release is fine - just not as good as the retail DVD because of the lower bitrate re-encoding (very long movie).

Wonderful film though. Watch it!

More than "a little" grainy. I appreciate any post but, that being said, this is one of the worst encodes I've seen in a while...the screener release, with all of its faults, is a much better copy.

The video quality looks ok on my 57" and I am very picky. It is a bit grainy in some spots but not as bad as the guy above me says.

7/9/9

Thumbs up

One of the best movies ever made and deserving of all the awards it's received and will receive. This deserves the dual layer touch but this is as good as it will get 'till then.

V 6 (It's a 2.5 hour movie) It's a little grainy sometimes

Brutal video quality for most of the movie looks like it was encoded off a divx copy this encode is the groups mess up..Some parts are ok and some are real bad take rar 05 add .vob to the end and play to see how bad this part is ...even 2.5 hours and the bitrate it has it should be way better quality i dought it was cce

This is not "as good as it gets" on dvd5 for a 2 1/2 hour movie and I don't understand how some of you say this is good quality on 50 inch sets. My 37inch lcd shows some scenes as ok but some others, like the first meeting of DeCaprio, Wallberg & Sheen for example, as horrendous. Walbergs face is nearly indistinguisable from the blinds.

As for it not getting any better on dvd5, what about the dvd screener release of The Good Shepperd just a few weeks ago. That movie was almost 3 hours and looked great compared to this.

Well I for one never said it was "good quality" but it is ok and worth watching. Its not as bad as you claim. That being said, I will give this one to a friend and wait for a dvd9 to be released or get it from Netflix to copy to a dvd9 because a movie as good as this deserves the best quality possible. Hell, I may even buy it.

Mitch Hedberg 1968-2005

Reading the reviews in this thread (some good, others bad) I felt the need to just see for myself.

The video...With the 3509 ave CCE bitrate, this quality is to be expected with a movie with this much movement..

Yes, it is grainy at times...By grainy, I mean you can tell it's been reencoded... This is of course a statement Im making before Ive seen the DVD9... For a 2:30hr + movie with the amount of movement, I agree with the movie needing 2 discs or a DVD9... Was it really noticeable watching it on my 19" CRT? Eh, not really. I could definitely see how it could be a problem on a larger hi-def setup. Wasn't that much of an issue for me as the movie was always on the move with alot of scene changes. On that note, I will be getting the DVD9 to make my own, as this movie deserves it IMHO.

Could I have done better with a 1:1 re-encode to a DVD5? No... I'm sure I would have gotten the same result.

Audio 5.1 was spot on from what I heard. No glitches, missing, etc...

Movie... I liked, even though I generally do not like deliberate remakes.. Marty's a living genius.
