Strange problem installing Windows

Girls computer is acting really strange.

After she woke up today she went to boot it up, and during the boot screen it kept restarting. I had her try booting in Safe Mode and still the same thing happens.

The way it's acting I really thought it was the Hard Drive, The headers in the hd have been bad for a while, and I thought it just died.

So I took my 30gig out of my pc and she installed it.

She has tried installing Vista, During installation it freezes up and doesn't continue. same with XP, XP MCE. SP2 Corp.

With the way it's acting, I know it's hardware related at this point, I don't think it's the ide cable, I am about to try that though, But Could it be the hd controller? What else could be causing this problem?

On a side note, Since I gave my girl my 30gig hd, which has my os on it. I reinstalled Vista.

Guess what VLC still doesn't work, I don't have a clue of why not.

The One, The Only

I agree that the RAM should be your next point of checking. Especially knowing that other OS installs fail.

If you boot off the windows XP cd with her drive, and press R for recovery console, you can log in and type chkdsk /r and it will most likely fix the reboot loop. This is most often caused by splattered registry file, usually the ntuser.dat (personal profile registry).

mod? no! asshole? yes!

also, in the F8 menu during boot, select "disable automatic restart on boot error"...
this will stop the loop and give you a blue screen with more info on it.

Last night it stopped posting to the bios, I got tired, and tired of fucking with it, I kicked the computer a few feet, I was rather pissed. Today I figured I would give it another go.

My parents always told me not to beat my stuff, because it never fixes anything, huh, What do they know.

I plugged it in and it posted to the bios, and then I changed keyboards and then it would not post to bios after that, I reseated the cpu, and it post every time now. But So I tried every chip of ram I have, I get the blue install screen from windows before it freezes, I am almost sure it's the Mobo.

The reasons I want to think it's the mobo.

Candyman has an extra and is willing to give it to me, and it won't cost me anything. lol. Thanks man.

A while back I noticed 3 pci slots are bad, the chipset fan doesn't run that well, it stops and starts every second or so.

A while back, when installing ram, I had to do one at a time, It would not work any other way. AT ALL.

I have been thinking the mobo has been going bad for a while, So I think it's biting the dust.

The problem that is happening is the ram slots are going bad, and maybe over heating, or something is happening.

lol, fuck you.

Well the mobo has been strong even with it's major problems, I didn't want to admit that that was the problem until I had to. I have had that mobo for about 6 years.

I got that mobo off of Candyman tonight, So far all is good. Will tell you more later if it works. Thanks guys for the info.

With the Mobo candyman gave me tonight, It is working.

It downclocked the cpu, I don't know why. I did reset the cmos batt. It's a amd 1800+ so it should be clocked at 1.53 or so, and it's clocking at 1.1mhz or so.

I don't understand that. Any ideas?

I don't remember this board doing that, but I do remember one of my older ones having this problem (could have been this board). Just check and make sure the FSB is set at 266mhz and the mulitplier is 11.5x.

Run CPU-Z in windows just to make sure it is running at the correct speed. This will also tell you the acutal FSB and mulitplier as well as other useful information.
