Wii: The Godfather, Black Hands Edition
After playing the PC version eons ago I was pretty stoked at the thought of a Wii version, especially considering the level of control in fight scenes with the Wiimote... I wasn't dissapointed!
Well, I finally grabbed it and despite a couple of reservations it's an excellent game still. Certainly as good as the original and probably better thanks to the well thought out and simplistic control system.
The game is essentiall a GTA clone set in 1940s New York. Violence and corruption are the order of the day and the number of Police kick-backs and rackets involved in the game is testimony to this. The missions are clearly explained and the map is informative. The game itself plays very well.
For what it's worth I played the missions for about two hours and I dickced about causing mayhem for another hour or so. Its the violence coupled with the "sandbox" gameplay that makes this game an excellent release for repressed sociapaths like myself. There's nothing quite as enjoyable as slapping some poor bastard around in the street and then pushing him in front of a car or repeatedly bouncing some unfortunate twats head off a wall before dropping him to the floor and snapping his neck - NICE!
All of this of course is done with the new control system which despite my reservations, works VERY well. In fact, after Wii sports it's probably the best implementation of a Wii control system I've seen thus far - the developers obviously spent some considerable time developing it and its appreciated.
Sadly though, the game has one major let down: The graphics. Whilst I didn't expect it to be a graphical tour-de-force I didn't expect the graphics to have been lifted straight from the XBox version and crammed into the Wii. Many textures look blocky and flat and the whole thing has a distinct last-gen appearance, although it is very smooth - I didn't notice any popup, tearing or frames dropping but that's hardly suprising, I suspect the Wii's GPU could read a book/cook a flan and still be able to render this game without breaking into a sweat. Shame on you EA, you couldn've tarted the graphics a bit but I guess you needed to get the game out of the door seeing as you completely missed the boat with the Wii launch.
The audio doesn't really deserve comment... It has sound! It's not shit nor is it remarkable, it just does what it does.
So, overall we have a game that is at least as playable as the original, with a much improved control system and graphics that look more like an PS2/XBox game. Its worth a purchase but not at full RRP - shop around (I got it for £30) or wait until you can grab the fucker preowned.
Gameplay 8/10
Graphics 4/10
Sound 5/10
Overall 7/10
