Trying to sort my old mans lappy. He gave it to me with a Corrupt or missing Windows\System32\Conf\System File error which of course didn't let it boot.
I Did the copy system, software, sam etc, on the recovery console, and now i'm getting the error"When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct." Which will not allow to log into the recovery console (no password was ever set) I've been reading that it's to do with the oem version of xp that's installed on this lappy and it's been set when i was copying etc. the files over.

Anyone know how i can log back into the recovery console or any sort of prompt to sort this problem.?
(Lappy doesn't have floppy drive obviously)

I could be wrong but I *think* there's a tool on "Hiren's Boot CD" that allows you to dick around with the stored passwords and extract/reset/masturbate them.

To elaborate on MS, do a repair install with the XP disc. Boot from the cd, pick the install xp option, and then the repair option. Just had to do one today on my girl's computer, her family decided that downloading and installing any ole' thing is just fine and dandy and in the process fucked the system, causing the ntldr file to come up missing along with enough spyware to keep the fuckin CIA happy for years. But after running the install repair along with Spybot, Ad-aware, and Kaspersky, everything is running just fine. And I too ran into the password problem with the repair console, having no idea what the hell I had set it at.

k, fucked around with a boot cd password resetter. It told me that there was no password set. So i've given up on that route.
The OS is XP home sp2, but i only have xp pro (used that for recovery console) and vista lying around on cd. Would it fuck it up and lose data if i do a repair install with XP pro?

Usually, the repair with Pro when using Home will "upgrade" you to Pro, but then you need a Pro key and activation, etc...

Pain in the ass, to be sure.

If you'd taken the registry hives from a system restore snapshot, you'd not be in this predicament

Thats what i was in the middle of doing when i got locked out . Unfortunatly after backing up, deleting and replacing the system,software,sam,security and sam files in recovery console i got locked after starting up again.
I restarted to boot in safe mode as admin (to go into snapshot folder etc. but as you know from my 1st post, i got an error "When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct." (it was an lsass.exe error..and no it wasn't a virus)

i believe your issue originated with the pro disc. if the disc you used had sp2 bundled, the patch for sasser was copied over when you went into the recovery console. this service is used to enforce the security policies on the pc (including login information) and was overwritten. restoring the original lssas.exe is the only way to fix this one.

any recovery software will do it, but if you can't load a virtual OS, you might have to pull the drive, connect to a drive converter and hook it up to your pc to recover the lost file.

if all else fails, send it to me and i'll fix it for you for a nominal fee.
