Media Codecs

If you want to watch a wide variety of A/V on your computer, then you'll need a variety of codecs for your media.

There are several flawed options for doing this, which include:

  • Getting an all-in-one media player such as VLC and sacrificing visual quality
  • Downloading a complete but often mismatched codec pack
  • Downloading all the codecs separately but risk missing some

In this subject, I have some recommendations to make:

It's good to have an all-in-one player for the odd times when you want to play obscure media and don't want to bother finding the codec. I would recommend VLC on Windows and MPlayer on Linux or Mac OS X. Install this first, and associate it with all formats, so it will play any media that isn't covered by codecs you install afterward.

Next, it is a good idea to download an all-in-one codec pack. When looking for a codec pack, pick one with not just a wide selection of playable formats but as few individual components as possible. The CCCP is successful, as it uses FFDShow as a base, and adds just the other essential codecs. It also bundles Haali's Media Splitter, which is good for playing files in the popular .mkv format.

Arguably the best player to use in combination with any codec pack (and bundled with CCCP) is Media Player Classic. When used with CCCP, it allows you to enable Haali's Video Renderer in the options, which gives an extremely faithful representation of the video, making it a must for HD content. It also solves the problem of washed out blacks that you get when using overlay rendering with nvidia graphics cards.

You should install these packs second, so it registers the appropriate file extensions for each type of file.

Then, you should install any specific codecs or proprietary players, such as HD-DVD or Blu-Ray decoders, or the DivX Player. It is recommended to only register these extra apps with the bare minimum of file types, so they do not interfere with your current codec configuration. For example, in the DivX bundle setup, untick the 'Generic MPEG-4 Playback' button. It is also a good idea to install the lightweight Quicktime and Real alternatives.

Finally, install any additional players to your preference, such as Winamp or Foobar, registering them only with the file types you would like to use them for.

If you follow this guide, you are ensured a wide coverage of formats and good looking video throughout your A/V experience.

Admin?

I've personally never had any issues with the visual quality of VLC or MPlayer and I'm outputting them via SVGA to a HDTV so I should notice any fuckups... I'm not saying they're not there, just that I've got no issue with the output and doubt that most people would unless they were watching on some 50" behemoth

(and the fact that MPlayer can adjust audio sync "on the fly" to fix some of the badly encoded shit that gets released makes me want to discharge an enema onto the keyboard)

Bitter, miserable twat.

You say getting an all-in-one media player such as VLC is a flawed option, then you say "I would recommend VLC on Windows". I don't like VLC and never have, but that's my personal dislike of the interface and nothing to do with poor visual quality.

I still prefer to separately install only what I need rather than a codec pack, however, I don't think CCCP is likely to fuck up your system.

The old Media Player Classic is no longer being developed, but there are unofficial patched and "home cinema" versions built by others (check Doom9). MPlayer for Windows is also a good option, with a suitable frontend like MPUI or SMPlayer if you're allergic to commandline apps.

I did once have my system screwed up by Quicktime alternative, so I'd never install that again. Older QT files will play with MPC and ffdshow set to decode Sorenson. I avoid all realmedia files. No-one with any sense uses the .divx extension so you will never need the DivX player.

Neither MPC or VLC is much good at navigating around DVDs, so I use PowerDVD for testing backups in software before burning. Version 7 also includes an H264 decoder.

It's more of a problem with nvidia cards and washed out overlay rendering that steers me away from VLC TBH. I still use it for obscure formats not covered by MPC (It is a modified version that comes with CCCP) but I notice much more contrast and vibrant colour using Haali's renderer.

pjeer?

I use VLC on OSX and XP/Vista but I agree with the loss of quality. I never really did any SD comparisons, but when I was testing out some 1080i .TS files a few years back, the playback quality in VLC was higher performance (ran smoother) but the output quality wasn't as good as in some of the other players.

But its the lazy mans choice, and I'm nothing if I'm not lazy.

Free... Like Nelson Mandela!

Also you may check out Zoom Player which comes with CCCP. For matroska, i likes it way gooder. The config options are endless and it looks focking phenomenal. I have yet to find a format it doesn't like.

Only problem I have had with mkv and WMP is the subtitles are always on, even after you turn them off.

VLC. Nope. Looks kinda like poo poo compared to Zoom.

I don't use Zoom because it requires VSFilter to be installed which pisses me off, I much prefer just using MPC's internal subtitles.
