i'm looking for a piece of hardware that will allow me to stream audio/video from my pc to a tv (in another room for example).

what is the device called and what else (if anything) do i need for this to work? a wireless router and some software i assume? and what does the setup look like. just plug unit into the tv and connect to the router, install software?

also provided i have a strong connection, any opinion of how smooth the playback is?

I use an xbox running xbmc. My PC is connected to a wireless router. My xbox is cabled into a wireless bridge which talks to my wireless router. All downloads on my PC (video/audio) can be streamed to my TV with ease.

my brother uses the dlink medialounge and it was pretty simple to get running. a piece of software on the computer acts as a server, just tell it which directories, then the unit itself sits in your entertainment center, the GUI is similar to an ipod...

the only thing i didnt like about it while using it was the seek performance was kinda shity, fastforwarding and rewinding were pretty much useless, though he said they had a firmware upgrade since i was there last and its not an issue anymore, plus he was streaming over an 802.11b router, so that kinda sucked too.

but yeah, plug it into .g or 100baseT and you should be all set.

A modded XBox is the cheap option but if you want a hot beef injection in your living room, look at some of the stuff by Kiss Technology (now Linksys/Cisco), but be prepared to be anally violated on price
