Ok so my old boss asked me to look at her daughters computer because it is full of viruses and spyware. Well it was horrible, tons of shit on it and has taken forever to get it off. So I finally got it to where I could actually do work on it and put avast onto it. Restarted and it scanned for viruses. It found a lot of them and I said to delete them.

So it finishes that and when I go to login it says something about not finding my profile. Try another account and it says the same thing. Thus I shut it down and reboot. Just sits at the windows screen with the scrolling bar. I proceed to attempt to boot into safe mode with no good.

I booted into the recovery console ran chkdsk /P /R and nothing. Tried fixboot and fixmbr...nothing. Tried an in-place upgrade and it just goes to the windows xp scrolling bar thing. Tried safe mode again and it won't let me boot into saying that windows setup can't be run in safe mode.

Any ideas on what I can do besides wiping the piece of shit?

get back into the recovery console and copy the files from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32\config

these files:

SAM
SECURITY
software
system
default


be sure to backup the current versions by copying them as *.bak first.

here's an article i found detailing some of the specifics, but thats nearly always worked for me in the past when i've had issues with user profiles.... LINKY
