my current pc spec is; asus an8sli deluxe motherboard, amd opteron 1.8 duel core cpu, both socket 939. 4g of giel ram, enermax 500w psu and a gforce 8800 gts 640 scc. i find that the cpu struggles to cope with the 8800 and i am thinking of up grading to a 2.6 opteron duel core cpu then overclocking the cpu to 3-3.2. at 140ish pounds for this cpu does it equate to money well spent or should i put this money to a total upgrade quad core ect around september 08.
your views would be much appreciated.

my friend just got the AMD HD9600WCGDBOX and he hates it. not only can he not overclock it, his sli performance has actually decreased, according to his benchmarks. all signs point to intel, even though it's more like having two dual cores than a quad.

if that physicx card was worth a damn, i'd say get that. unfortunately it overheats, the fail will fail within two weeks and the performance is predetermined by the game (if the game wasn't written with the card in mind, it does nothing).

is the giel dual channel? how fast is it? since the mobo supports a fsb of up to 2000 and the cpu supports 1000, im assuming you're running @ 1000, but did you already overclock it? from the specs, it looks like you should have a half-dozen multipliers left.

start a counter in system performance for cpu, ram and hd. that should clear up the mystery behind the bottleneck. with a card like that, if it's running on single-channel ram, you will have issues.

i dont understand your quotes about the phenom i dont want to upgrade to that. all i want to know is is it worth spending 140 nika on the opteron 2.6 duel core cpu. its the fastest socket 939 cpu ever made even quicker than the fx .http://www.amazon.co.uk/Processor-A...t/dp/B000EIXT5Q i am doing a major upgrade around sept' but feel my cpu does not compliment my 8800 at this time. "seems to slow". my geil memory is also duel channel.

jay are thanks for the complements mate. a mate of mine use to overclock my machine for me as i have no idea how to do it. i have only had my pc for around 2 yrs. my opteron 1.8 was overclocked to around 2.3 and was running fine then for some reason slowed and went back to its default settings. as i am a noob at O/C i thought the easiest way to improve my pc performance was to buy a faster chip. the fastest socket 939 cpu ever made is the opteron 2.6. this cpu would last me till i changed to a intel quad in september. all i asked was is this opteron 2.6 worth the doshers for fuck sake. or would it be a wate of money. the loss of 500mhz has slowed my pc down considerably whaen playing games or encoding.

sorry dude, i was pissed at someone else and took it out on you. basically, you're better off going with the dual and leaving the quad alone, per my friend that got a quad and went back to the dual.

so there it is. install the 2.6 and OC.

easiest way to tell if your system is OC is by comparing the clock speed to the actual processor speed. start, right-click my computer, properties. that will show you the clock speed. then go to the Hardware tab, device manager, CPU. that will tell you the factory speed of the chip. compare the two.

the only reason a mobo would go from OC to not OC (aside from you changing it of course) would be if you reset your BIOS. this can happen by removing the little watch battery or by setting the jumper to manually reset it.
