VCD Repair - Not having much luck :(

Hi Everyone, I need some guidance.

I am trying to repair my Honeymoon VCD which is about 5 years old. It use to work fine but now it has a lot of blocking (I think that it is what you call it) appearing on the video to the point it is almost unwatchable. I have tried copying the contents of the disc to my hard drive but i keep getting the following message:

"Cannot copy file: Invaid MS-DOS function"

Then i have done various Google searches, Video forum sites and i have tried, extracing with ISOBuster. Repairing with VCDGear and TMPGEnc. They seem to do their job but when you watch the playback, whilst it is a bit better, there is still a lot of blocking.

Then someone told me that the data on the disc is unlikly to be damaged, it is more likely to be becasue of dirt and scratches on the disc. Well I have cleaned the disc and the disc surface is in good nick so I assume that this is not the problem.

I have tried the following search on this site:

"How do i repair a VCD"

but get the following message:

"The search term you specified (vcd) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific."

I have no idea what that means. I tried various other sentences but got the same message.

I am ok with computers but nothing great and i wonder whether i am using the right tools but not to their full potential or whether I am trying to fix something which cannot be done. I have even look to find somewhere or someone who can do it for me who I can pay but i have not found anyone.

So, any help anyone can give me would be very much appreciated.

Admin?

Try using imgburn to generate an ISO file (it should just batter the CD until it gets a good read or at least skips just that sector). Next, mount the image using Daemon Tools or similar and then try ripping the virtual image with VCDGear, although you may get away with simply re-burning the ISO to a new disk once you've ripped it.

Basically, the only thing I'm suggesting you do differently is use imgburn to tear data "kicking and screaming" off that disk and work on the ripped ISO... Look in imgburn's settings for the hardware and software read retry/error correction settings.

... oh, and let us know if it works, nothing more annoying than giving advice and never finding out if the bastard worked

Hi Neversoft

Sorry for the slow reply but i have been trying out your suggestions. I have been trying to rip the data off using IMGBurn but after 24 hours it had still not finished and had about 400 errors. this is the same problem i was having before. I have therefore assumed that the surface of the disk is damaged and have sent it off to get the surfaced de-scratched to see if this works.

I had a different edit of the disk which works a lot better and i have got an image of this. i used IMGBurn and then Daemon tools to create a new .dat and .mpg file. i then tried to import the file into windows movie maker and Nero to edit the software but keep getting an error message and then it fails. While i wait for the other VCD to be returned, i am going to use nero to try and get am image directly of the VCD as the second one seems in better nick. I will let you know how i get on.

Are you wanting to edit it or just remaster it? If you're just wanting a 1:1 copy on DVD, try VSO ConvertX to DVD.

Just to bring you all up to date.

I am trying to take the image off the VCD disk and convert it to a DVD. Before I do that I may need to edit the video because when I play it now, it has lots of blocking on it. Also, I have struggled just to copy the disk due to read errors.

When I made the VCD I made two disks. The first one has hardly been used and it works fine with very little blocking but there are syncing issues later on in the disk. Also, this disk was not the final edit. As a fall back, I could try and edit this disk and correct the syncing I assume using Virtual Dub but I have never used it before and this would involve a whole lot of new learning so my preference as this stage is to try and get a working image off the “master copy”.

I have tried various methods of extracting a working image but there were too many read errors. Therefore I sent the disk off to someone to clean up the surface which was not that bad, just to eliminate this as a potential reason for the problems. The disk is now back and initial playing of the disk has been fine with little or no blocking on the sections I tried. Therefore I have gone back to Neversoft’s first reply and I am trying to extract an image using imgburn.

When I left work is was at 15% after 6 hours and was finding errors but I hope less errors then there were before. My plan is to run this until it finishes and then try and get it into a format where I can use Windows Movie Maker or Studio Ultimate to edit it and then create a DVD from there.

Hopefully imgburn will have finished by the time I go back to work tomorrow.

I will keep you posted on my progress.
