HD goodness

Blu-Ray players are starting to come down in price.

Best Buy has there own brand Insignia Blu-Ray Player for $169 and the reviews are rather favorable for it.

You can get the SAMSUNG Blu-Ray Player BD-P1500 for $199 along with Panasonic, and Sony. So you do have choices.

If you want a Denon which is what I really want it's still gonna cost you $500 which I'm not willing to spend that much on a player, lol.

I'm starting to consider a BR player with these prices.

Speaking of downloading HD rips.

I usually download the .x264 which don't play on the 360 but there are ways around that.

You can convert the .x264 into an mp4 file while you preserve the video quality but lose audio quality because the Xbox can't support the 5.1 audio with that format. I've converted a few movies and they all work on the PS3, and the 360

I really like the WMV HD movies, I recently got Wanted 1080p which looks awesome, and The Dark Knight 720p which looks great. The WMV files look great and the Xbox 360 supports 5.1 audio with this format.

Has anyone tried out the Netflix service with there 360? That's bad ass.

I'm sorry but with the Netflix streaming service it makes the Xbox 360 the #1 choice for media.

Why even bother buying a bluray player?

Just buy a cable that connects your PC with your TV.

There's nothing I love more when watching a DVD than being lectured for 20 mins that I should have bought the Blu-Ray version instead because DVD is total crap.

That's what I've been doing for eons, but I've wanted a stand alone player for HD rips and I guess I found my answer. I'm watching Back to the Future 2 right now and it looks great on the 360.

I can't afford to get a Blu-Ray right now. The moment I can I am going to buy on and then start renting movies from netflix. I won't buy many movies I doubt.

Some DVD's look great still.

Some movies like Harry Potter 5 look like pure horse shit on dvd, it's unwatchable.

Search for rips with "AVCHD" in the title. I'm told these will play back on most recent standalones without any further conversion.

Hi-def players. Check whether they support AVC first. Not all do.

Yeah, I googled AVCHD after reading your post, and yeah I guess some BR players do play em.

I could only find a few movies in that format.

mod? no! asshole? yes!

how much machine do you have if you're playing 1080p .264 files? I've got severe stuttering on a sample i downloaded as a test, and that's on a athlon 64 3200 @ 2.2GHz, 2gb ram, radeon x1300 256mb graphics...

I guess its probably time for an upgrade, but what're you using?

Well the 360 plays 1080p perfectly since it's designed for it.

On my pc I have "some" problems with 1080p I have to use VLC to play em because with every other proggy out there they stutter.

I have AMD 5000+ 2gbs ram, ATI 2600xt agp 512mb

I'd say anything a bit better than what I got you're good on playing 1080p with most applications.

I prefer watching these movies on a stand alone player though.

dual core and 64bit OS help. I have an old single core Athlon 64 3200+ that wouldnt run 720 much when I had a 32 bit OS (Arch Linux). Slapped 64 bit on and 720 plays flawlessly.

Id say any dualcore with 2 gigs of ram would easily play 1080p. Your vid card might need an upgrade if you see a lot of tearing. I used ot be an nvidia man so I dont know the stats on older ATI cards.

as i was typing that i thought to myself "good lord, its time for a new rig!"

i hadn't realized its been about 2 years since my last upgrades... oh well, pricing out a quad core phenom wtih 8gig ram and a 512mb radeon 4000 HD series card... might be a good christmas after all. come to think of it, that'll probably speed up my encoding time just a bit too...
