I may have made a thread about this before, but oh well.

I just installed Windows Vista Home Basic on this computer (a fresh HDD) and I am having problems. My monitor keeps shutting off (or appears to be hibernating, i.e. the light goes from blue [powered on] to orange [sleeping]). I thought this may have been a graphics card issue, but I have installed the latest NVIDIA drivers and have used this card for a good while and it has worked fine. Can somebody please tell me what it might be? Thanks in advance.

Note: I also changed my setting to 'NEVER' turn off my monitor.

When does it turn off? While you're using it or after a period of time? Is Vista the only thing you changed - i.e. all other hardware remains the same?

Did you check the Power Management settings in Device Manager for your gfx card and monitor?

Lmao. I don't believe the monitor requires any drivers (that I can remember). And the video driver is up-to-date.

This problem is still occurring, and I do not know how to resolve it..I'm positive my graphics card is overheating, but how do I resolve this (besides using a fan). This computer (or graphics card) never behaved like this until recently, and I would like to know how to fix it. If anybody could assist me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

My graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce 6800, and again, I have NEVER had this problem (using this graphics card).

This happens with all games (that I am aware of).

GTA III
GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas
In The Groove 2
Pump It Up Pro
Etc
Etc

What temps are you getting?

find yourself a copy of driver magician and update your drivers

Try another monitor and see what happens. If you don't have another one have a buddy let you borrow theirs.

Also if you can get your hands on another AGP card try that as well and see what happens. Use a Nvida card of course since you already have the drivers installed. If you can only find an ATi AGP card then completely remove the Nvidia drivers shut down the system, install the ATi card and install the latest drivers and see what happens.

Worse case you may have to do a clean reinstall of Vista if it's not a hardware issue.

Have you checked the gfx card fan connections on the mobo? Any changes to the CMOS recently?

Have you tired running your pc with the side of the case off and having a fan blowing over the gfx to ensure its definatly that issue?

When you selected "Never" to tuning the monitor off, double check you selceted "Never" for the powered via mains option. I've known people to select the powered via batteries one by error.

When you didn't have any problems were you running Vista also or something like XP?

One last thing, when your monitor turns off while playing a games do you still get music from the game like its still playable or is it a total freeze up with that too?

When I was NOT having problems I was running XP, and once again am (I kicked Vista to the curb). Candy, I have tried a couple of monitors and am now using my LCD tv (DVI-to-HDMI). Last night I actually took my graphics card out, took off the top plate, and cleaned out a good amount of dust. Today I will see if that makes a difference, which I imagine it would..time will tell. Thank you all for the suggestions.

Solving this problem depends how retarded you are.

I.E. if its simple you would of sorted it out yourself other wise your retarded.

Now if its tough then it sounds like a Hardware problem. Either the monitor of the Graphics card. Process or elimination is the answer.

Unless you eliminate hardware for sure we can't really help you.

So is it a hardware problem or a software problem?
