Suspiria - Movie Review.

Suspiria

Many of you out there will most likely have never heard of this superb Italian horror masterpiece. Your either a) not a hardened horror fan or b) too young to remember it.

I'm writing this review to coincide with the forthcoming release of the R1 and R2 DVD Special Editions and also in the hope that after reading this, maybe you'll feel compelled to go to the store and rent/buy a copy (or download it if you can find a copy).



Suspiria was made in 1977 and directed by the legendary Italian master of horror, Dario Argento (Dawn of the Dead, Trauma, Demons 2 and the awesome Tenebrae). But this movie is unlike any other. It's unique.

From the very start the movie gives you the chills. We begin in an airport in Germany at night, rain is lashing down, thunder, lightning the works. This, incorporated with the original score (by the awesome team, Goblin) makes for a really spooky start as we see our main character travelling from the airport to a dance school, where the majority of the movie is set.



What follows are a series of (very) gruesome and violent murders and police and detectives are called in to investigate. One of my favourite scenes is where one of the girls at the dance school is being chased by an unseen enemy around the building. The unseen evil knows the girl will try to escape and so deliberately sets traps to slow the girl down as well as torture her. In one segment we see the girl escaping through a window only to fall in to a mountain of barbed wire!!



The photography is unique too. I got the feeling Argento was trying something new, something innovative. For a picture made in 1977 this movie was way ahead of it's time, and in some aspects it still is. Bright vibrant colors and innovative use of lighting and scenery all adds up to a movie that messes with your head, but at the same time is a treat on the eyes and ears.

Now is your chance to search for this movie. Try it, it's different, very different. But maybe you'll succumb to it's charms?

Rating: 10/10 - A genuine classic.

Thanks guys, i hope the review has inspired peeps to want to track it down.

Most of you will find this movie is catered for a very aquired taste. If you have been brought up on a diet of 'teen scream' flicks and slasher-fests you probably won't get much (if anything) out of this movie.

For the more refined among you (ie: those willing to give something new a try), this is your chance to put this movie to the test. You'll either love it or hate it.
