Review: Sol Goode (2001)

Sol Goode (2001) Review by Joan Of Arc.

America. Land of the brave, home of the free, criminals of making billions of teen sex comedy movies that just aren't funny. When i picked up Sol Goode and read the spiel on this movie, i was more than underwhelmed.

Sol Goode (pronounced S'all Good), is a twentysomething, happy-go-lucky guy who has absolutely NO direction in life. A man who thinks he can breeze through from point A to point B without having to lift a finger. He believes he can be somewhat of a success in the movie industry, his concentration on it is so intense that everything else in the world bears no importance.

Luckily Sol has some great friends, one of which is the incredibly funny and incredibly sexy Chloe (Katharine Towne). Sol scores occasional advertisement work and when it dries up and he drifts ever faster to hitting rock bottom, Chloe steps in to give him some much needed advice on how to turn his life around.

This is one funny movie. Namely because it brings something new to the already tired teen/sex comedy genre. Sol Goode's humour is more geared towards an adult fashion, in that the comedy is incredibly funny, but not told or visualised in ways we have already seen millions of times before. One scene in particular, Sol and his friends go out drinking and Chloe is left standing at the bar talking to a strange stoner guy telling her some immensly detailed and fucked up story that just had me screaming for air with laughter. Not every joke works, and some scenes seem a little like stopgaps. But again, the movie does justice to it's genre by carrying itself out in a much better manner than so many other movies out there.

This movie has a totally kickass soundtrack with lots of fun and popular songs. Most of which seem pretty well suited to the movie. Also the camerawork and editing is well above par. Lots of fast edits, reaction closeups and a nice bright print splashed with heaps of colour.

Sure, you've seen these kind of movies before, sure this movie is a low budget, practically unheard of piece (heck, it was released in 2001 and i only heard of it last week). But it's a very charming and very funny movie.

Ok, here's the deal. Yes, this is 'another' teen comedy, but this one pulls it off in awesome fashion. Sol Goode is one absurd movie. It's humour is just immensly funny and i loved it. Every second of it.

Fuck the critics, go watch this movie and laugh until your head falls off.

Final Score: 8/10 ''Dude, this guy is my hero. He like totally fucked my sister.''

p.s: The girl who plays Chloe is a 110% babe! *slobber*

pjeer?

this movie is 2-dimensional, with cliched characters.. after 30mins i hadn't noticed a plot, after 60mins i still hadn't found it, all the music was old, it didn't have anyone in it i *really* knew.. it was predictable...

i liked it.

dunno, was just something different enough about it.. maybe it was because the main character was 27 years old rather than 17. im fed up with watching people play characters 7 years younger than they're supposed to be, so this was a wake up (along with Van Wilder, which also had an older main character for this type of movie, which i also really really enjoyed). and the music was old cos this movies been on the shelf for 2 years. way to go lions gate, a movie people would probably enjoy, but you dont bother doing anything with it cos the genre is a bit overdone now.. but hell maybe thats a good thing. if i'd seen this plastered everywhere with the typical "teen comedy sex romp" advertising and all the brats saying how cool it is etc.. i probably wouldn't have particularly enjoyed it. but as a film i picked up without any hype, i thought it was a good fun way to spend my morning.

it gives me hope that theres life after 25 y'know.

8/10

My thoughts exactly. Shame on Lions Gate for doing nothing with it, but fneh, whatchoogonnadoo?

I liked it too for the same reason, that it wasn't another 'teen sex romp, coming-of-age drama' bullshit we've been spoonfed for so many years.

In short, Sol Goode is a refreshing change for movies of this type and a movie i for one, am glad i saw.
