serious dvd/mpeg2 playback trouble

ok here goes
suddenly my pc will not play any dvd.
WMP 9 says it is not capable and powerdvd wont play anything at all.wmp will still play avi and mpeg 1 but thats all(though still very buggy).
I tried to install/uninstall all codecs and software etc but still no joy..
Anyone have any better ideas?

if it helps:
amd 2100+
512ddr ram
80 gig hdd
geforce 4 mx
msi mobo
xp pro +sp1
nimo pack 5 build 7

hmm, and here's a wierd thing...VLC will play anything i put in it?!

Putting the fun in fundie

Have you installed the wmp 9 codecs after you installed the player?

Check windows update for the codecs and go to microsoft.com and upgrade to directx9.0
