Entertainment News for Week of April 16, 2003

Since my dads been rassling up interviews for his radio show I thought I'd do the news this week

No SCORPION KING Sequel
THE SCORPION KING actress Kelly Hu has announced that there will be no sequel to the hit film. "I wished it would happen, but if it hasn't happened now, it won't, I'm afraid," said Hu. "I loved working with The Rock, he was a lot of fun, I hope we'll get a chance to work together again at some point."

KNIGHT RIDER Gets New Writers
Revolution Studios has tapped David Elliott and Paul Lovett to write an adaption of the classic tv series KNIGHT RIDER. Original star David Hasselhoff is executive producing the film, which is being branded as an action-comedy. The original KNIGHT RIDER centered on Michael Knight and his talking car K.I.T.T. Mark Ciardi, Glen A. Larson and Gordon Gray will produce.

Sandler Buys KOPPS
Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions has acquired English-language remake rights to the Swedish comedy KOPPS. The film is about a small-town police force that is being shut down because of a lack of crime in the area. So, to save their jobs, the cops take it upon themselves to spark the crime rate.

Swayze To Cameo in DIRTY DANCING Prequel-Sequel
Patrick Swayze has agreed to make a cameo appearance in DIRTY DANCING 2: HAVANA NIGHTS. Swayze will reportedly make a "dance-floor cameo," wherein he'll tell the two main characters to "have the time of your lives." Diego Luna and Romola Garai star in the film, which sees Garai playing a 17-year old girl that moves with her family to revolution-era Cuba, where she falls in love with a young Cuban dancer that helps her "discover herself and the world beyond her sheltered existence."

Winston Ushers Forth An APOCALYPSE
Stan Winston has acquired film adaption and action figure rights to 3DO's new video game APOCALYPSE. "I've been developing creatures and characters for 30 years," Winston said. "And today I'm no longer limiting it to movies because the line has been blurred -- comics, toys, video games and movies are all enjoyed by the same audience." The action figures are expected out this Halloween.

Homey Does Play That
Damon and Keenan Ivory Wayans have signed a deal to develop a movie based on their classic IN LIVING COLOR CHARCTER Homey the Clown. Damon will star in the film, which is about an angry clown. Keenan will direct.

MSJ Talks GHOST RIDER
It has been a long time coming but it looks like Ghost Rider is finally coming to fruition. After Steven Norrington stepped out and both Guillermo Del Toro and Tarsem were connected and subsequently ruled out as possible directors, Daredevil helmer, Mark Steven Johnson has accepted the challenge of transferring the flaming vigilante to the screen.
Bringing out the darker side of Daredevil, Johnson would seem well qualified for the adaptation of what is far from one of Marvel’s more light and airy properties. The story centres around Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stuntman who sells his soul to the devil in order to save a loved one's life and subsequently finds a demon sharing his body.
Exclusively talking to Empire, Mark Steven Johnson gave his reasons for taking on Marvel's latest. "The Ghost Rider is one of the great icons in comics," he said. "It's that classic Devil and Daniel Webster story. A Faustian bargain that change's Johnny's life."
Nicolas Cage is still slated to take up chain and biker jacket as the man himself, prowling America's highways ready to turn his penance stare upon unwary villains while Johnson goes back to the drawing board to begin a new draft of the screenplay. " The studio wants me to write my own version of Ghost Rider. I want to go back to the source material and use more of the comic. I'm just sitting down to write now. This project has been close to going before. Hopefully it's not cursed! I'm hoping that we could be shooting next winter."

Cameron To Return to ALIEN
James Cameron, who directed Aliens, held out the possibility of helming another installment of the popular SF franchise in an interview with the Canadian Edmonton Sun newspaper. Cameron told the paper that it would have to be truly scary and likely an R-rated film.
The 1979 original Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, "holds a special classic niche as one of the great terrifying experiences," Cameron said. "And the trick [to making a new Alien film] is you don't go crazy and make a $150-million movie, because you don't want to have to compromise. You don't want to try to do a PG-13 Alien that is all things to everyone."
Cameron added, "It's got to still maintain its roots in this kind of cinematic id. Ridley did it really beautifully. He just kind of put you into this Freudian nightmare space."

SPIDER-MAN 2 Gets John Jameson
Daniel Gillies has been cast in the role of John Jameson in SPIDER-MAN 2. Jameson is the son of Peter Parker's boss Jonah Jameson. He is also an astronaught that is dating Mary Jane Watson. Production begins April 12 on SPIDER-MAN 2.

Kruger is Helen of Troy
Warner Bros has tapped German actress Diane Kruger to play Helen of Troy in TROY, for director Wolfgang Petersen. The film stars Eric Bana (THE HULK) as the prince of Troy and Brad Pitt stars as Achilles in the epic tale laid down in Homer's THE ILIAD. "Diane is not only a stunning beauty but a gifted actress with tremendous emotional depth and presence," Petersen said. "The role of Helen is charged with the grandeur of history and legend. I am confident that Diane has the charisma and artistry that this compelling character demands."

Diesel and Sena Captain DREADNAUGHT
Vin Diesel and Dominic Sena are in negotiations to star in and direct, respectively, the military action-thriller DREADNAUGHT. The story is about a captain who must go up against his commanding officer on the most high-tech warship ever built. Lucy Fisher, Doug Wick, Sean Bailey and Cooper Layne are producing. The script is from Blake Masters, with a rewrite by Dan Gilroy and David Arata and another by Stephen Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson.

Wahlberg, Maybury Tries on THE JACKET
Mark Wahlberg and John Maybury have agreed to star in and direct, respectively, THE JACKET, for Mandalay Pictures and Section Eight. The pair replace Collin Farrell and Antoine Fuqua. Wahlberg will play a man wrongly imprisoned for murder that, while being tortured, can see how and when he will be killed. By moving through various "altered states," he has to figure out ways to keep himself alive so he can solve his own murder. Steven Soderbergh, George Clooney and Peter Guber are producing.

Robinson Spins His HOT WHEELS, Alcott for FANTASY ISLAND
Columbia has tapped James Robinson to write a screenplay for the first installment in a franchise based on the HOT WHEELS toys. The story is expected to center on some young hero and will, of course, involve many cars. McG is set to direct. Stephanie Savage will executive produce through McG's Wonderland Productions, while John Baldecchi and Jason Hoffs are producing. Meanwhile, Todd Alcott (ANTZ) has agreed to direct a film adaption of the classic television series FANTASY ISLAND for Columbia.

Chu Ready Sing With BIRDIE
Columbia has tapped 23-year old USC graduate Jon Chu to direct a remake of 1960's musical BYE, BYE BIRDIE. Apparently Chu attracted Columbia's attention through a short musical he made for $20,000. Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing.

Carmen Electra Up For STARSKY AND HUTCH
Carmen Electra is in negotiations to join the cast of Warner Bros' film adaption of the '70s cop show STARSKY AND HUTCH, starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. The film will star Stiller as Detective David Starsky, Owen Wilson as Detective Kenneth Hutchison and Snoop Dogg as informant Huggy Bear. Electra will play Stiller's girlfriend. Stuart Cornfeld, Akiva Goldsman, Tony Ludwig, Alan Riche and William Blinn are producing. Stiller and Gil Adler are executive producing. Todd Phillips is directing from a script he wrote with Steve Long, John O'Brien and Scott Armstrong. Production begins today.
