I agree on the official thread, but this movie, ahh, I loved it. Makes you think like crazy. I don't really want to give away the ending, but let's just say it happened.. and oh man, it's creepy. I just gave it to my brother, and he's watching it as we speak. I had to obtain it the old fashion ghetto way because I have no real hook ups yet, but no matter how you get it, see it. Rent it, whatever, just watch it, it's awesome. Lot of swearing just so you know.

I love that movie.

on the imdb boards there was an interesting theory about how the movie worked. theres the guy in the red jump suit when him and his girlfriend are in the park about to kiss, he appears in 2 other scenes and is supposed to be satan. when donnie dies he makes a deal with the devil to get to relive his last month or however long it was over again. its kind of proven in a number of scenes, like his teacher making the girl pick who she wants to sit beside based on how cute they are, and of course she picks donnie; donnie telling off the self help guy at the essembly; donnie getting the self help guy arrested; various things like that working in donnies favour. since the devil is evil and all he lets him do it, but kills his sister and mother also in the plane crash (although the sister would of died anyways, unless the coach girl wasnt planning on using that airline, that plane, that flight time, etc...).

whether the theory is right or not doesnt really matter to me, the movie was great and is open to a lot of different interpretation.

I interpreted it almost completely different. Since it's an old movie, I'll voice it here. I think that at the point he goes up stairs, after calling his mom a bitch, it becomes more of a dream. Yes all those crazy things were a dream I think, working in his favour, being to perfect, not getting caught.. Also I do think that those symbolic interpretations are some what right. But really pulled it together for me, was in the end, he dies in this movie, or dream. The song playing has a few key points, Mad World, and "I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, that the dreams in which I am dying are the best I've ever had..". Just thru out the whole movie, I find things to be set in that way. It's all to perfect. I don't see this make a deal with the devil thing. Sorry.

but the thing is none of that would of happened if donnie would have died... for instance..

flooding of the school -> lead to teacher getting fired
burning of the house -> lead to donnie's mom taking the kids instead of that bitch... and so on and so on

donnie was supposed to die in that house, but because of frank from the future he came back and called him out of the house, and since he kind of escaped death, it created a time paradox and shit... which would equal the end of the world...

i believe that that guy may be the devil, and that fat chinese chick is his angel, but i read somewhere that the guy may be a red herring (someone or something to throw you off) and hes wearing red... so maybe...

Red suit guy == A guy from the FAA. He was at Donnie's house in a suit when the engine hit. He's watching Donnie for whatever reason, possibly to make sure he doesn't talk about the incident since his parents signed a waiver saying they'd keep quiet. The fact that he's dressed in red symbolizes how he is a red herring, in that he has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the movie. Also, from what I've read, Richard Kelly is a big fan of David Lynch's movies (which I have not seen any of, yet) who supposedly uses red herrings as well.

there is only one explanation for this movie, it is not self-interpretted. it is explained. watch some deleted scenes. read the book on the dvd. there is only one way this movie works. been such a long time since i watched it i forgot what it is, but me and a friend definately decided that it is that, and that alone. loved the movie though!!

This is the only DVD I have where listening to the directors commentary is a must. It seems like when Donnie cheats death in the beginning of the movie it starts an alternate universe and its almost in this universe he is like a "super hero" he even talks about it when walking with Gretchen after they cancel school. This movie would be even better if they kept the deleted scenes in it there is one in particular that kinda gives a little insight to the fact that Donnie's dad might have gone through some of the same things as Donnie. I mean I always wondered why his dad woke up and started watching t.v. when the plane engine fell in the house. This film is one of the most impressive movies a first time director has put out that I have ever seen.
