Entertainment News for Week of April 21, 2003

Anchor Petrocs back with you for another addition of Entertainment news...

piss poor week for news too

Dutton Joins GOTHIKA
Charles S. Dutton has joined the cast of GOTHIKA, starring Halle Berry. Mathieu Kassovitz is directing the film, which is about a criminal psychologist (Berry) at a mental hospital who wakes up one day to find herself a patient with no memory of a murder she supposedly committed. Suddenly she becomes "the pawn of a vengeful spirit." Dutton will play her husband. Production is under way in Montreal.

Thornton Handles CHRYSTAL
Billy Bob Thornton has agreed to star with Lisa Blount (THE ACCOUNTANT) in the indie film CHRYSTAL for first-time director Ray McKinnon (THE ACCOUNTANT). In the film, Thornton will play a husband that returns home from prison to find that his wife's (Blount) depression, caused by the death of their child years earlier, has gotten worse. The script was written by McKinnon. Production begins May 28 in Arkansas. ** Side note..will this guy EVER stop acting?

Kilmer, Idle, Duncan Save the World
Val Kilmer, Eric Idle and Michael Clarke Duncan have joined the vocal cast of of Fathom Film's computer-animated fantasy DELGO. The story is about Delgo, a troubled youth that must team up with some unlikely friends to save the world from itself. Kilmer will play a fearless, cocky soldier. Idle will play an idiot imp. Duncan will play Delgo's mysterious mentor.

Wolverine's Dark Side Emerges
Hugh Jackman, who returns as Wolverine in the upcoming X-Men sequel, X2, told SCI FI Wire to expect more of Wolverine's dark side this time around. "That stuff in the mansion, I loved all that stuff," Jackman said in an interview, referring to a scene at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. "I like the whole idea of Wolverine being the babysitter reluctantly and having 50 people coming. In this one there was more of an example of his berserker rage, which was one thing I think was missing from the first."

X2 reunites the original cast of mutants and adds several new ones in a complex story with a new villain, William Stryker (Brian Cox). Jackman added that he has a couple of intense scenes involving nightmares of his past, as well as a few emotional ones with Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). Then there are the elaborate fights, particularly involving a new character played by Kelly Hu. "I got a bit of a concussion on one thing, but she's a pro, man," he said. "If she'd hit me, it would just touch me. It would look like she'd whacked me, but she's a black belt, so she knew how to do it."

Not so himself, Jackman added. In one scene, he's on the ground while Hu runs up to him. He's supposed to turn and punch her in the stomach. "She kept saying, 'Harder, harder, harder, harder. I can take it,'" he said. "I said, 'Just do me a favor. Will you wear a pad there?' ... So she put a black pad on there, and I turned around and bang, I hit her straight in the [breast]. Four takes without the pad I'd gotten right perfectly, and as soon as she gave me the target, bang. And I said, 'Did I get you ... ?' And she goes [grimacing], 'Yep. Just a little lower. Thanks, Hugh.' That was the only time she didn't ask for it harder." X2 opens May 2.

Bruce Willis Drops Out of ME AGAIN
Bruce Willis has dropped out of Intermedia Film's ME AGAIN. Willis' production company, Cheyenne Enterprises, has also pulled out of a producing role. According to Willis' camp, the decision came because of differences of opinion over the direction of Willis' character. However, rumor is that the conflict was really over moola. Dean Parisot will direct the film, which is about an amnesiac man that wakes up in a hotel room next to a dead body. He then must figure out whether he's the hitman or the undercover cop that was supposed to take the hitman down.

Zicherman and Metzner Strap on Black Leather
New Regency, Fox and Marvel Studios have tapped Stu Zicherman and Raven Metzner to write ELEKTRA, a spinoff of the Jennifer Garner character in DAREDEVIL. Apparently the pair were hired because of a strong script they turned in; that script was an adaption of Marvel Comics' DEATHLOK. Garner will reprise the role in the spinoff, which is shooting for an early 2004 start. The storyline will take heavily from Frank Miller's THE ELEKTRA SAGA, which means for fans of Elektra, Stick will be a pivotal character. DAREDEVIL director Mark Steven Johnson will produce with Gary Foster and Avi Arad.

Byrd to Direct KING'S RANSOM
Jeff Byrd (SOUL FOOD) has agreed to direct KING'S RANSOM for New Line. The script, from Wayne Conley, is about a universally despised businessman who finds out that he will likely lose half of his wealth in his divorce. So, to prevent that, he arranges his own kidnapping to wipe himself out. However, he quickly discovers that he wasn't the only one planning to kidnap him.

Krumholtz Tickles the Ivories for Crusader
David Krumholtz (THE SANTA CLAUSE 2) has joined the cast of Crusader Entertainment's Ray Charles biopic, UNCHAIN MY HEART: THE RAY CHARLES STORY. The film will star Jaime Foxx as the musician and look at his life from his poor upbringings in Albany, Georgia to battling racism and drug problems, to his rise to fame. Krumholtz will play Milt Shaw, Charles' longtime manager. Regina King plays Charles' wife.

These are hot off the press

PREACHER To Begin Production in June?
Actor James Marsden (X-MEN's Cyclops) has told MTV.COM
that production on a PREACHER film could start this June.
Marsden is attached to the lead in director Rachel
Talalay (Tank Girl)'s adaptation of Garth Ennis'
VERTIGO Comics series about a fallen evangelist
who sets out to find God himself with his bounty
hunter girlfriend and Irish vampire best friend.
"I [like] the maturity of the relationship between
Tulip and the Preacher, the mix between the issues
that it deals with, that it's kind of a Western and
that he walks around with the image of John Wayne
around him," Marsden told the site. "I also like
the bravery in Ennis' writing. He's not afraid to
tackle the hypocrisies of modern religion and things
like that. A couple of people have said, 'Boy, if
Garth Ennis had created a religion, I would sure
like to be a part of that.' It just makes sense,
the way he tackles things in it. It's really heavy
stuff [and] it's incredibly well written."

Silverstone joins SCOOBY DOO Cast
VARIETY reports Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) has
joined the cast of the SCOOBY DOO sequel, where
she'll play Heather, "a relentless reporter who
is aided by a museum curator" played by Seth Green.
Director Raja Gosnell and screenwriter James
Gunn are reuniting on the sequel, already set
for release on March 26th, 2004.
The first live-action SCOOBY DOO film makes its
cable premiere on HBO this Saturday night at 8.

Alicia Silverstone...she hasn't been in many movies since Clueless. Just out of curiousity, did any of you like Clueless? Well...she's certainly picking bad projects, at least in my mind. I hope Scooby Doo 2 flops big time.

Costner to Play a Baseball Player...Again

Joan Allen and Kevin Costner are in negotiations to star in the indie film THE UPSIDE OF ANGER. Allen would play the mother who must suddenly deal with not having a husband. She and her four strong-willed daughters must learn to survive alone. Costner would play a friend of the family and, of course, a former baseball player. Mike Binder (MIND OF THE MARRIED MAN) will direct from a script he wrote.

A Silver Bullet for DMX

DMX is in negotiations with Phoenix Pictures to star in the action-thriller WEREWOLF for director Dario Piana. In the film, DMX would play a "mysterious bluesman" who has made it his mission to rid the world of the werewolf. The last cadre of such creatures live in Hollywood with the rich and drug-addicted. DMX would also produce with Arnold Messer and Jason Saffran. Paul Kelmenson is executive producing.

This one actually ticks me off...

Miramax Delays BUFFALO SOLDIERS Again

Miramax has announced that they have pulled the potentially-controversial BUFFALO SOLDIERS for a fifth time, pushing the film's release back this time from May 9 to July 25. In May, the film was scheduled to open in limited release, but now it will open only in New York and Los Angeles. The film, which was made in 2001, stars Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Paquin, Ed Harris and Scott Glenn in a story about soldiers in 1989 that sold drugs in Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. "We don't want this film to be misinterpreted and we want to be sensitive to the current situation in the world," Miramax' Chief Operating Officer Rick Sands said.

It's good Watts is doing some more projects. Didn't like the first Resident Evil so bleh, don't care at all. And as for Cody Banks, well I hope Hilary Duff is in the sequel.
