Review: Longwave- The Strangest Things

Well now..its New York just turning into the Rock n Roll Meca of the world these days...particularly the Village. The underground scene on New York has always been there with the likes of Blonde, The Ramones, and Talking Heads, all the way up to and including the new guards with the likes of The Strokes, Interpol, Ryan Adams, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, and now Longwave leading the way.
The band - Steve Schlitz on vocals, Shannon Ferguson on guitar, Mike James on drums and Dave Marchese on bass. The band can be described as a mix of Radiohead, early-U2 and Psychedelic Furs, Slowdive or Swervedriver, even Joy Division, but this band definately stands on their own. With the release of their first record the Strangest Things, Longwave has been unleashed on the world and the world has responded with open arms. Longwave became the new "IT" band for the year 2003. So naturally I was excited and a little anxious to hear the album when it was released in America.
The album didnt disappoint. 12 solid songs written to perfection with melodic rythmn section and a vocalist ready to conquer the world. The album opens with "Wake Me When It's Over" a song that reminds you of a song plucked from the chords of The Cure's Disintegration. The ultra mega "Everywhere You Turn" changes the pace, a song so rock n roll it could teach the Strokes a thing or two about song writing. The heart of the album starts with "I Know It's Coming Someday" through the beautiful "All Sewn Up" also includes the bands first single "Tidal Wave" which eerily reminds you of the best songs the Edge and Bono wrote together. And the last 3 tracks arent bad either. The albums closer "Day Sleeper" is an instrumental that works on all levels. What a great way to end this perfect album..a showcase of where this band is going on the backs of their amazing musical talent.
I recommend you drop whatever you are doing and go and find this album and if your local store doesnt stock it kill them with staples.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Stand out Tracks:

- Everywhere You Turn
- All Sewn Up
- Tidal Wave
- Pool Song (Will remind all Strokes fans of..well..The Strokes)
- Day Sleeper
