Entertainment News For The Week Of July 31, 2003

The new DUKES OF HAZZARD?

Depending upon your preferences, this next story will either do nothing for you or send chills down your spine. Warner Bros. has been kicking around with the idea of turning the 80s TV show THE DUKES OF HAZZARD into a feature film, in the vein of CHARLIE'S ANGELS or the now-filming STARSKY & HUTCH. According to The Hollywood Reporter, THAT 70s SHOW Ashton Kutcher and 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS's Paul Walker want to play the big-screen versions of Luke and Bo Duke.

Also into starring in the movie is comedian Anthony Anderson as Boss Hogg, Hazzard County's richest and craftiest resident. And if the rumors are true, pop singer Britney Spears could be trying on a pair of denim shorts as Daisy Duke.

If this gets off the ground with this cast, I can't see anyone buying Kutcher as Batman. What's it going to be, Ashton: the Batmobile or the General Lee?

***Dear GOD,
Please injure Ashton and make sure we never have to stomach another film from him again****

Macy might pick up the phone

As development continues on CELLULAR, the latest actor who might be answering the call is William H. Macy (JURASSIC PARK III). Macy is in talks to play a police officer in the movie.

Kim Basinger has already been cast as the kidnapped woman who dials a random number. Chris Evans will play the young man who answers the call and tries to determine the woman's location before the juice on his phone runs dry. David Ellis (FINAL DESTINATION 2) is still onboard to direct and Dean Devlin (ID4) will produce.

GET SMART Will Ferrell!

Former SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cast member Will Ferrell is forging ahead on his burgeoning film career. After scoring a modest hit with OLD SCHOOL and completing filming on ELF, Farrell has now attached himself to star in a possible big screen version of the classic TV comedy series GET SMART. Farrell would play the role of secret agent Maxwell Smart, originally played by Don Adams on the TV show.

Now that Farrell has attached his name to the Warner Bros.-based project, producer Andrew Lazar is shopping the GET SMART movie around town and to prospective screenwriters.

CURSED appears to be cursed

The Creature Corner website reports that Oscar-winning makeup effects designer Rick Baker is no longer working on Dimension Films' CURSED. The Corner received a tip from one of their sources and then confirmed the departure with Baker's office, Cinovation.

CURSED, directed by Wes Craven (SCREAM), has been filming in Los Angeles. Unconfirmed reports of creative difficulties have been heard, that major portions of Kevin Williamson's screenplay had to be rewritten on-set resulting in shooting delays. The movie stars Christina Ricci, Shannon Elizabeth, Omar Epps and Skeet Ulrich.

Corner is also reporting that KNB is coming onboard to complete the remaining werewolf effects for the film. Cinovation has already shipped KNB the movie's creature molds.

Dorff in the DARK

Thanks to the official website for the ALONE IN THE DARK movie, we now know that Stephen Dorff (BLADE) has been cast in the film. Dorff is credited as playing the character of Commander Burke, whomever that person is.

Also new on the AitD site are photos from the set from the first day of filming. The first look at Christian Slater as paranormal investigator Edward Carnby is there (and here) along with some behind-the-scenes shots of the production.

THE SENTINEL is resurrected

Screenwriter Scott Rosenberg (KANGAROO JACK) has been tapped to reimagine THE SENTINEL, a horror movie from the 70s from Universal. Producer Kevin Misher (THE SCORPION KING) is onboard as well.

Rosenberg will keep the basic premise of the film -- a young model moves into a old brownstone and experiences strange occurances -- but move off in a new direction that the original didn't.

People, it's just a matter of time before THE DEVIL'S RAIN is reimagined!

FANTASTIC FOUR director confirmed out

First confirmed on Ain't It Cool News last week by Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad, today's The Hollywood Reporter reiterates that director Peyton Reed has exited Fox's FANTASTIC FOUR movie project. According to the Reporter, Peyton's departure was due to "creative differences". What specifically those differences were remains a mystery.

The studio still wants to release FF in December 2004 and it's drafted a shortlist of replacement directors. A screenplay is still being worked on by writer Mark Frost (TWIN PEAKS).
