Field Order & Video Mode... ??? help!

Hi,
In TMPGenc Xpress 3.0 it gives a option....

Advanced Clip Setting

VIDEO MODE : Progressive / Interlaced
FIELD ORDER : Bottom Field / Top Field

Are these settings's for the input format or the output format & what do they mean? ...lol?

usually the wizard will choose the right settings for you. most dvds are upper field, whereas camcorder footage is lower field. wrong field order gives odd looking output, you'll know when its wrong video mode is how the frames are presented. at 50i, each frame holds half the information, at 25p each frame holds all the information. progressive is better

and i imagine they're for input.

You know when you say progressive is better?.... is it best to encode all my movies as progressive output ?

Anything that was originally shot to film - e.g. movies or primetime TV shows - should be IVTCed and encoded as progressive.

For material recorded on video, like sports broadcasts or your own camcorder footage, then you can leave as interlaced if you will only be watching on a TV. It'll look smoother and more detailed. You might however want to de-interlace if the output is intended for watching on a PC, but depending on how well this is done you may get unnatural movement, blurring, etc.
