how can you tell before downloading the movie if you can switch of the subs

yah....if it's VCD it either does have subs or it doesnt (you can't switch these)

if it's SVCD there is a chance (if there are subs)

DVD (why wouldnt't subs be here)

AVI, maybe hardencoded or need use of a sub file

if it says subbed, then you're not to worry.
