Why are the files so big?

why is it that the files are so big on usenet but they are 1/2 r 3/4 of the size on irc?

It just seems to be taking forever on usenet to download a file compared to irc? Could it be that the files on usenet .rar files are actually already mpeg files and the .avi files on usenet are not yet converted?

Both are about 26kb/s

Can anyone help ...... trying to decide whether to stick it out with usenet or revert to irc?

Does... Not ... Compute... If it's the proper, untouched release they should be more or less the same.

I'm guessing you should just shoot yourself, and do us all a favor.

Canis rufus atheist

If you were having such success with IRC, why change?

Just looking at 26k/s, I think you answered your own question.

ok, ok, before I shoot myself ..... as someone kindly suggested

Nbpro is saying 217.5kbs/27.5 and irc is saying about 26kb/ps
(adsl connection).

which is faster ..... perhaps I interpreted Nbpro wrong?

Ah... I think I'm starting to have ideas! I don't use Usenet but aren't posts stored as text or encoded as UTF-7 or something like that? That would increase the file size until it was downloaded and decrypted.

mod? no! asshole? yes!

encryption, headers, and bloating will account for less than 5k per 15MB .rar...
not a lot to worry about on DSL.. thats only a second or two extra on a dial up connection too...

and for dscottsoandso, assuming you have no typos, 27.5kbps is faster than 26kbps, but both are midrange dialup bandwidths... 26KBps is 8 times faster than 26kbps, and is still slow for a dsl/cable connection... i regularly get over 300KBps on both usenet and irc, or 2.4Mbps and higher...

plainly put, my usenet connection over cable is 95 times faster than that.

if your dsl connection is only giving you 26kbps then id look for an alternative..

Usenet allows only for transfer of text files, so binary data is encoded using an encoding scheme such as uuencode or base64, which increases the file size by about 33%. There is a new encoding scheme called yenc which decreases the bloat to about 2%, however there is some controversy about yenc.
