lets say im looking at a 1080i bluray rip of a movie.
its about 36gb blaa blaa blaa


can it be burnt to a blank bluray disk like an iso of a dvd,
or am i talking out my ass?

ive tried 8gb single files burnt to a dvd-dl and played em on my ps3 but whats up with these 36gb shit?

So yes u can burn an iso file, and in theory you can play them on a ps3 or br box as they should be region unlocked and protection removed (protections lie in the menu files)

1 suggestion though do a couple of test burns before committing just to make sure your pc is efficient to burn em without crashing or freezing, i am also told as they take some time to burn you may want to watch the heat generated whilst burning them

There has been talk that B.R players will have firmware updates similar to consoles to play the newer films to curb piracy, plus Sony already has something of a back up so i hear through the grapvine, so the days of standard dvd will be over for a while and not straightforward as is currently.
Reminds me of the cracked cinema t.s DTS days when within a few weeks of all the top films coming out with perfect surround sound, then they come and bring out DTS.v2 which they kept up there sleeve
