why are they encoding to svcd still when most have dvd writers and dvd are cheap as cds, i wait for xvids better Quality and small size to download like robots telecine

Hey now,

Some people prefer SVCDs because it saves on Bandwidth, Xvids maybe a smaller file size, however not everyone wants to spend the time encoding them into a file that they can use.

Personally, I prefer XVIDs, simply because I have a DIVX DVD player. (5 movies onto 1 DVD) Sometimes, ill grab the DVDr if it's worth the download.

Scene needs to update, simple as that.

MPEG2 at the time of general rulesets was considered the best quality compromise, DVDR didn't exist at the time and VCD for DVDRips wasn't that great. MPEG4 derived codecs were showing promise, but generally were.. shit. Also unless you had TVOUT you couldn't watch them on TV.

But times move on, and MPEG4 is now going to be the world standard for broadcast TV, especially HDTV. Lots and lots of people are buying firmware flashable hardware that can process MPEG4 codecs, and its definitely the way forward.

Telesyncs aren't the greatest quality usually, which does make encoding to DivX/Xvid harder, but a good encoder will usually do a decent enough job. Given the fact you can work with a higher resolution, also scalable (so if you're filming in 16x9 you can make a 16x9 output video) and with a multichannel soundtrack.. for a short film a 1CD release will look good enough.

There's been lots of releases out in SVCD and XVID from Telesynced sources (not reencodes) but the XVID isn't spreading as much yet. Most site rulesets haven't changed since 1999, as to be honest.. most siteops don't seem to have a clue!

Give it a year or two, or a few more big groups changing their priorities and it'll shift.

Robots.TC.XviD-MoF

There was no xvid of the robots tc till today because no xvid group had the source. simple as that.

SVCD scene is dying on the vine...but itll take mpeg4 compatibility on standalones (as alluded to above) as standard before it goes away all together, if it ever does. Some people like the format

It takes a little time and effort but I personally just reencode the svcd's to dvd format. It would be nice to see more xvid/divx sources but its not up to me so I work w/ what I get. Im just glad its not all avi's
