AR is indeed the aspect ratio... but it's way more complicated than one would think at first. 4:3 is fullscreen TV (1.33:1)... 16:9 is HDTV (1.77:1)... most widescreen movies are either 2.21:1 or 2.35:1.
here's the comlicated part... DVD format is typically 720X480, and that can be either 4:3 or 16:9. Notice that 720 divided by 480 is neither 1.33 nor 1.77. the thing is that for digital video the pixels are not necessarily square, they can also be 'rectangular'. so you can have all sorts of pixel ratio that in no way correspond to the simple division of the width pixels by the height pixels. Unlike MPEG for DVD, SVCD, VCD, AVI's tend to use square pixels so the simple division of width by height gives you the aspect ratio of an AVI.
