Using a 2nd router as a hub...

OK.... short story...

I have two D-Link routers. I'll call the one that is hooked into my cable modem - "Main-Router" and the one that I want to act as a hub - "Hub-Router".

I want to plug the Hub-Router's uplink into a port on Main-Router so to expand the total ports available to seven (3 from the Main-Router, minus the connection going to the Hub-router; and 4 from the Hub-router).

I already seached google, but prefer an answer from someone that has actually done it or something similar.

I have done this, and it is not that big of a deal.

In the setup screen for the "hub-router" you want to make sure that you turn off the DHCP Server so it does not try to issue IP's. then plug it in (crossover cable).


As for the 4400, you go ahead if that makes you happy, but dont do it on my account.

I think my setup is similar to yours right now.
I have 2 dlink routers, both with dhcp server and NAT. Here's my setup:

Modem
|
|
|
Router#1 - 3 clients, NAT, DHCP server
|
|
|
Router#2 - 3 clients, no DHCP.

Router 2 is connected to router 1 from one of it's regular ports (not the uplink port) to a regular port on router1, using a regular (not cross over) cable. The 3 clients on router 2 get their ip's from the dhcp server on router 1, and I do all the port forwarding and firewall options on router 1. The only thing is that I have a max of 6 ports between the 2 routers, since 1 port on each is used up connecting to each other.

Thanks guys.... I have my Straight & Crossover cables ready to give each scenario a go as soon as I get home today...



I have spoken to the producers of The 4400, and they guarantee that season 3 will not suck.

Worked exactly as you said Red_S..... Unfortunately having 6 ports only total kinda sucks.... But hey.... beats buying a hub.

Currently I have 4 PCs on my desk, one for each DVD Encoding, Gaming, Downloading, and Linux Server... (all are cabled because (a) they're right next to one another on a KVM, (b) I transfer files back and forth frequenly and only have an 22Mbps wireless router, and (c) I don't want to buy wireless cards for more boxes since I have plenty of spare NICs, box of CAT 5e cable, and tools to make cables)

I also have a PC out in the living room and my laptop from work (both are wireless).

That's 4 ports (not having to count the wireless) for 6 boxes.

I want to add another box (cabled for faster file transfers or streaming) in the living room running MythTV.

I also want to buy a USB Print Server for my Epson R200 printer.

Lastly I want two spare ports (1) just in case a port goes bad, (2) to plug in my laptop to quickly copy thing off the Linux Server HD (wireless is sometimes too slow if I'm in a hurry) and (3) another port for when I work on someone else's PC, I don't have to unplug one of my own. I could buy a USB wireless card, but I don't want to spend the money. I'd rather buy a hub....

So.... I really need 8 ports, but I can live off of 6....

Sooo.... to summerize... I don't consider my wireless good 'enuf for file transfers, only for email/web browsing etc... But I do a lot of file transfering... so... I like 'em wired.

Is why you are avoiding just buying a multiport switch and using the routers you have on hand?
I know how wives can be with that shit, which reason #430909 why I no longer have one.
