I guess I never noticed when they started coming out with +r's.. whats the difference?
reason I'm asking is that I'm getting a dvd burner and probably going to buy a 50 pack of dvd-r's, but they have 50 pack dvd+r's for the same price, the burner im getting will burn both, my dvd player is a couple years old so im thinking i should get dvd-r.

I've always have used -r as I was told they play better on most dvd standalones, which seems to be true from the above statement. Your best bet is try them both and see which one you prefer.

I wondered about that too, since the dvd burners maintain the same burn speeds for either format, ie. a newer 16x will burn both at that speed, not -r at 12x and +r at 16x. So more than likely, that is bs. As for +r, I've never tried them, but then I've had nothing but great results with -r in all my players.
Having been the proud owner of the first DVD burner for my PC (a whole whopping 1 speed and +format) i have seen this debate echoed in all forums. Which one is best? Well. I used to be an avid supporter of the plus format as the discs could be burnt at 2.4 speed and the minus at 2 speed (going back a few years here guys :-) ) but the real problem with plus is that the home DVD players generally turn their nose up at them. As most cheap players use Panasonic parts the cheaper players tend to perform with minus format. (panasonic were the proud inventers of plus and phillips coined in on the plus). BUT for all round PC/DVD Domestic/PS2/XBOX compatability the minus wins hands down.
For whatever reason you need to burn to disc, i would say that the minus format rocks and the plus format sucks big donkey dicks.
The real debate should be which speed is the most reliable for burning DVD Data. If i burn at 12-16 speed i get terrable results yet at 6-8 speed i get fantastic results.
