laserdisc was one of those mediums that never quite took off. Made big attempt to storm the market in late 80s. Was quite big in Japan. Non existant in UK and not sure about US. My Dad brought some back on a trip to Japan ages ago. Laserdiscs predate the phillips cd-i player (the first ever cd console). They're basically large record sized cartridges that contain a cd-type media (like UMD for PSP but squarer and MUCH larger). That's how I remember them anyway.

square cartridges? haha. you're thinking of something else, dude. they literally look like a silver 12" LP with a big hole in the middle like an old 45rpm single.

laserdiscs were, and are, fucking awesome. back when half the douchebags on earth were sitting around with their fingers up their ass watching mono pan scan vhs shit, I was kicking back to ac3 and widescreen clarity wondering what was wrong with people's brains. thank god dvd came and brought quality to the mainstream.

I still have my original star wars trilogy box set (not se) in prime display position. and I still have lots of good stuff that hasn't come out on dvd too (like hearts of darkness). laserdisc's livespan aint over for lots of people
