Bacon up that Sausage Boy

The best new stand alone

Philips Progressive-Scan DVD Player with DivX, MPEG-4 and DVD+R/+RW Playback

I just bought it for $80 USD...for that price it f'ing disposable.

It plays it all:

PAL / NTSC
VCD
SVCD
DivX
It will play a grilled cheese sandwich

All of the bells and whistles to boot.

When your APEX breaks down (and it will), save your money and get this one.

I just bought the Philips DVP-642, which plays DiVX/XViD (might be the same one).

I like it (I have three more APEX's in the house), so far so good. However, I read that it may have problems with Retail DVDs. I havent' had issue yet.

69.99 at Target and Amazon.com

Here's what I don't like:

  1. Won't fastforward at 16X, like the APEX.
  2. No eject button on remote (STFU, I like a goddamn eject button on my fuckin' remote)
  3. No option to "jump" to an exact time (I don't usually watch a whole movie)

The only plus that I really like is it's ability to play the .AVI's. Great quality (I'm not talking about SMR & TMD), faster downloads, one disc, and a shit-load of fistful porn.

It's a Philips, and simply for that reason I wont be buying one... They make unreliable shit and their customer service is fucking woeful. Grrr, thinking about it just enough to type this paragraph is making my blood boil.

FUCK EM!

Bitter, miserable twat.

I've heard similar stories about Philips' unreliability.

The new Samsung DVD-HD945 looks interesting, I'm waiting to find out more about it.

All I'll say is my Philips DVR880 was the biggest steaming, palsied, rotten cunt of lo-tech shittyness ever. My 90-year-old Grandma's bowel movements are more reliable.

Putting the fun in fundie

My Philips 642 has made me a fan of DivX/XviD.

I've seen some 2 disk DVD->XviD/AC3 conversions that looked outstanding! In fact, so nice.. that (depending on the movie) I would rather have a 2 disk Xvid/AC3 than a 2 disk SVCD DVD rip.

Plus with all-in-one converters like Dr.Divx and Auto Gordian Knot, conversion of your own stuff is easy and compatible with the 642.

It's played everything I've thrown at it, I love it!

p.s. Hey Brits! Philips does have a MPEG-4 model for your islands, it's just not labeled 642, I think it's 727 or 737. Do some digging, it's worth it.

BANNED

I'm drooling for a well-built player that will play DivX/XviD. Imagine taking twice as much time to go through a 100 CDR spindle!

Yes, but the stores can't keep them in. Best Buy is taking lay away orders.
Radio Shack gets them in about once a month.

$99.99. CAD

Meh.

If it breaks, I'll go buy another. It was only $99 dollars, I've had at least $120 worth of enjoyment out of it anyway.

How much is the player in ol' Blighty anyway? All your electronic stuff is soooooo over priced. I laughed my ass off when I went into 'Dixons'

apex dvd players break down fast

i have one..and if you leave, a small fingerprint on your discs...everything will get all choppy/distorted/and start skipping (skipps dvds a lot if the disc is barely dirty..)

i always have to wipe the disc before i put it in the stupid apex (1100W).....but after you do all this...it works good

Haven't had enough issues with APEX to complain about the $40 spent so far. And I've had them for a good 3 years so far. I can't complain.

Only the high street stores... Dixon's IS a fucking joke but if you shop around you can get decent prices. Anyway, there's always online stores!
