The Ring

I saw this movie in a screening last night so i am gonna do a review since there is none up.

The movie is basicly a remake of Ringu which came out in 1998 i think and i havent watched it so i cant really compare the two.

The storyline is about a tape that if u watch it , u will die after 7 days from that time. So it begins with a teenage girl who watches it and dies then a friend of her mom is a reporter which starts investigating the matter . I wont go into details so i dont rewin the movie for thos who havent watched it .

The movie was very very entertaining and scary. It will for sure put u on the edge of ur seat. Its very mysterious and has alot of surprises.

I would say its one of the best horror movies i have seen and i think it will be one of the best this year . I really dont see how they got away with a PG-13 rating since i dont think a 13 years old will be ok after watching this heh.

I give it 9/10

(I cant spell by the way so ignore the mistakes)

This remake should never have been made. Unfortunately it's the only way i can see it making people curious enough to want to seek out the original trilogy.

But then again, most people will go "eww! i hate subtitled movies". If your one of those people. Please fuck off and die.

I refuse to watch this remake out of protest in that i know the original will be shunned away like it never existed. And that pisses me off more than anything (ie: Tarantino blatantly stealing everything from City On Fire and throwing all the ingredients in to make Resevoir Dogs).

Having just read the most retarded review of a movie in quite some time (http://www.comingsoon.net/reviews/ring.php) i have come to conclusion a) the man is a clear as day spastic and b) he should never be allowed to review another movie in his life.

If you get duped by this gay media marketing campaign, then more fool you. The end.

From what i understand only the concept of the tape and the girl are shared between the two movies while the rest is different . i might be wrong on that but i think u should give this one a chance before u judge on it . i am gettin a copy if the original and i will see it this weekend and post my thoughts.

Anyone else seen both movies please post ur thoughts.

Peace

Well. I can't wait to watch this film.. I've got the game on my Dreamcast, and from my understandings, it is more or less along the same lines as the game..

I liked the game, so I'm sure I'll like the movie...

Dude, the movie is probably 'ok'. But what pisses me off is the fact that everyone will start going 'oh wow, the ring was great!', don't you mean ringu? someone will say, ''wtf is ringu?'' says mr./ms. mornoic trend-savvy sapion.

That's what pisses me off. The original is a world away from this hyped-up, glittery, candy-coated Hollywood nonsense. And it's just a shame that the original will now most like be quietly swept away.

If it was a movie of it's own right, and not a remake, i'd see it differently. But i loved the original trilogy, and from all the gossip i've heard about this film it seems like the director and crew have paid little to no respect to the originals.

I quote ThEiLlEsT "From what i understand only the concept of the tape and the girl are shared between the two movies while the rest is different ." Therefore meaning, for a movie that is supposed to be a remake, the director has extracted one key element and paid fuck all attention to the original movie. That blows, if your gonna do a remake do it properly. What he's basically done, in laymans terms is stolen one concept then made up an entirely new movie based around it in the hopes of passing it off as his own concept. I refer once again to the case of Tarantino, Resevoir Dogs and City On Fire. Blatant stealing. I reiterate my point, if the movie was completely original then yeah i'd love it. But it's not is it.

Once again, the Hollywood sector quietly strangles yet another ounce of talent with their garbage. It's a sad world.

of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion...but please don't share yours until you take the time to watch the movie...if you watch it and still don't like it, then i totally respect your opinion...but to criticize before seeing it is both unfair and obsurd.

i'd give this a 9.2/10 rating

I'm the fan of the Ring series. (have watched Ring, Ring2, Ring0, Rasen and the mangas, and of course this remake). I think the remake has done its job. It creates a great atmosphere and although I know what the story's going, I'm still scared. The classic scene of this new version is still in my head for days. The bad points about this remake is it lacks the pacing of the original and the story behind the girl is not convincing to me.

I would say the remake will introduce more people to the original Ringu and even the novels. (although I haven't heard any English version available) Just to note that, the original Ringu is not the first. There is already a TV series before Ringu based on the novel. Still, Ringu get a very good comment from all over the world.

To know more about the Ring, I recommend here:

Not sure if you mean novels or movies here, but anyway, the movies are available with English subtitles. The UK Region 2 editions are all English subtitled. I think it's the Region 0 ones that are in Cantonese or original Japanese with no subs. I'm not sure though so don't quote me on it. Dunno about the novels though.

I'm sorely tempted to give the US remake a try, but i'm still angered by the way it's being treated and i'll be sorely disappointed if it is due to this movie that people will forget (or never know) where the whole thing was originally conceived. It's been done to so many movies in the past that i only fear it will happen to these movies too. And that's a shame...

I mean the English version of the novels. (Although I have the ebook of the 4 novels in Chinese, I think English version would interest more people here.) Luckily my country has all the Ring movies I want (except Ring0, which I can still find it on the web).

Concerning the US remake, I have read from the RINGWORLD discussion board. The webmaster said there are more and more people asking him where to get the original Ringu movie. So, to be optimistic, the remake has certain promotional effect to the original.

P.S. some interesting info, in Japan, they have a funeral of Sadako (the evil girl), meaning that Sadako has changed its form over the sea to Samura (the girl in remake).

Ah ok, cool. If you want Ring 0, buy the PAL Region 2 UK DVD. It's released on Tartan Video.

It's good to hear that Ringu is now being sought afer. Maybe my preconceptions were wrong? We shall see as it unfolds. I still believe that most people will just simply flummox for the USA version and that, to them, will be it. Though the only people that will do that are fat people in jogging suits (don't ask lol) who consume vast quantities of trash tv each day. They believe everything they read. N*Sync is they're favourite band and they wear tight clothing at disco's in the hope of acheiving self belief that they are not overweight. They're also fat...

.....and why shouldn't it!! That little claymotion penguin is too damn cute.

Wac Wac Wac he goes but nobody knows what he's saying.

All hail Ringu.....Hmm, or is that Pingu? Hmmm.

Anyway....seriously i'll prolly see this when it hits UK shores (The vcd looks really crappy in terms of quality so i'll wait ). In terms of Hollywood scare factor i doubt its gonna be much cop but i bet its better than Final Destination 2

This movie was freaking amazing. I knew going in that it was a remake but never bothered to dl the other. After seeing the American version I felt that I needed to see the original and downloaded a very nice DivX version.

Both have their strong points and negative points. If you havent seen Ringu then I suggest you get ahold of a copy , but do it AFTER you see the Americanized version in a THEATRE. I dont think Ringu was as "disturbing" as the remake but that is honestly probably because I knew what was coming. But holy freaking crap I am going to have nightmares about that eye. (the people who have seen Ringu will know what I mean.)

Rent them from your local DVD rental store (highly unlikely in the USA coz it's not out there) or buy the trilogy. It's avaliable on UK R2 DVD on Tartan Video label.

Best to see an importer or check out www.happyhunter.com
