I just completed Mass Effect a few days ago. And I gotta say I was kinda dissapointed. It wasn't a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, it just wasn't an elite game. I personally think the 2 most overated games of the year were Bioshock and Mass Effect. When you read into all of the hype a game has and you get that excited to experience it for yourself, well that game better be damn good. I'm talking Gears of War good, or Res Evil 4 good. And Mass Effect wasn't that good.
It's also not an RPG. It's an action, shoot em up game with RPG elements. All you do is put points in a combat system which sucks. Also, you can blaze through the entire game with never using a single biotic I actually found biotics to be boring and troublesome. They arent very exciting to use, not like KOTOR's force powers, which were a blast. Also, yhou never really have to do a single side quest in this game. Side quests are boring because all you ever get from them is a little money, which is stupid because midway through the game you'll have like 6 million credits. I dont need to save some scientist for a measly 200 creds. And also, the famed story really wasnt all too compelling. Kind of boring actually. No twists or turns to it. You dont gain anything from being good or evil, like in Kotor you gained powers based on your standing of good and evil. The game is way too damn easy and avoiding side quests it can be completed in less than a few hours.
I'd give Mass Effect a 7.8 out of 10. A great rental but a horrible buy.
