Overheating problem

Getting some problems with overheating on my pc. Used a prog called prime95 to put it through its paces and it shut down.

Was going to replace the cpu cooling fan as the fan speeds seem to be low but before I did I checked the cpu temperature and got some confusing results.

Core#0 is running at 50degrees C hotter than Core#1, even under a small load. 127degrees on core0 and 80 degrees on core1.

Would a faulty cpu fan cause this much temperature difference between individual cores? Or do you reckon the fault lies within the processor?

Processor is a Core 2 Duo E6700/

afaik prime95 is a single threaded process and to properly stress test a mutli-core cpu with it you would need multiple instances assigned to each core.

do you have a fan controller or some way of adjusting fan speed? you may be able to mess with the speeds and assign temp threshholds with Speedfan and skip buying new hardware.

That is incredibly hot for a Core 2. Critical load for an E6600 used to be 61 degrees. So, something is seriously wrong there. Are you using a standard HSF or an aftermarket cooler? It seems to me as if the cooler is not on the processor properly. I use either an Arctic freezer Pro or Tuniq Tower and they both bring the temps down a lot. Coolers are not necessarily flat and sometime have a concave plate, so a technique called lapping is sometimes used.

I have a q6600 and my idle temps are about 40 degrees and load is about 65 to give you an idea. That's clocked from 2.4 to 3.2 with 1.35 volts of vcore going through it, and prime stable for 8 hours. Prime95 will run threads for as many cores as it sees. Current cooler is an arctic freezer pro.

If you download a program called coretemp, then it will give you a value called the Tj max. This is the temperature at which the CPU with throttle. I would suggest keeping about 25 degrees below that number.

So, I would advise that you reseat the HSF with some decent TIM and then boot to the bios and see what temps you are getting. I would expect something like 30-35 degrees at idle in the bios. Then boot into windows and make sure the temperatures are roughly even on the cores. It should be almost the same with a Core 2, with a quad, the temps will wander more between cores.

I already used that prog Core Temp to check the temperatures under different loads.

Tj Max was 87

Core#0 127
Core#1 80

Had the computer for just over a year, never had overheating problems before with it, this is a recent occurance, gonna go ahead and switch out the cpu fan. According to Speedfan its only running at 2000rpm and I can't get it to go any faster.

With expert precision and genius innovation I cleaned out about 23 kilograms of shit that had accumulated inside my cpu fan. . It was a real mess and immediately noticeable once I had taken it out the case, looked like the inside of a pair of Neversofts mums boxer shorts.

Its now running colder than an Eskimo's gonads.

Are you one of those people who buys a new electric razor every year because the old one mysteriously stops working?
