CODECS FOR DUMMIES

Since this is an on going discussion!!

people i have asked alot of questions every where i go and have come up with 4 basic codecs needed to convert every thing from DIVX / XVID with AC3 6 channel audio with perfect results.no more sync problem here. ;D

if you are having sound problem/sync problem try this:

step 1: (most important step)remove all those stinky codec packs completely.

step 2: install XVID http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml

step 3: install DivX 5.2: http://www.divx.com/divx/download/

step 4: install DivX 3.11 Alpha: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html

step 5: install AC3 ACM Decompressor: http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/index.html

feel free to comment. hope this helps

cheers

XviD has moved to http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml
You probably don't need DivX 5.2
I prefer AC3filter http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

before long i suggest adding matroska and ogm (my fav ) codecs to your list (simply as 'not required, but worth having')... with any luck, before long, we'll be seeing more of those releases....

anyway, divx is definately needed, xvid is the way to go, but you still find divx's floating around... so its handy to have.

also suggest a link for videolan player, as it doesn't need codecs, and could be a preferable choice for people who dont understand codecs and dont want to stuff around with them...

The very latest FFDShow works well for decoding XviD, DivX and such. I pretty much only use that, nowadays.

Haven't done a lot of encoding lately, but I'd choose RV10 + AAC (6CH) over anything else, using AutoRV10 & mkvtoolmix etc.

FFDShow used to be ok when the xvid codec was young and unstable it was a worthwhile alternative but xvid has matured and FFDshow hasn't kept up... I uninstalled it recently myself after noticing even the latest version had sync issues with the majority of TV rips I downloaded.

Previously I would have said the only two filters you need are ffdshow and AC3Filter.

But recent versions of ffdshow have problems (e.g. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.p...0810#post530810 ). Also the development of ffdshow has mushroomed, from a light-weight DirectShow MPEG-4 decoding filter, it's now bloated with additional features like audio decoding, VFW compatibilty and so on.

So get the Xvid codec and use that for decoding XviD. (The XviD decoder will also decode DivX 5 - but you will only use that if you are getting non-scene releases off P2P.)

XviD won't decode DivX 3.11a, so if you want to play older releases, or some xxx releases, then you will need to install that.

So in summary, for playback of scene releases, you need:
- XviD (definitely)
- AC3Filter (definitely)
- DivX 3.11a (maybe)

well i havent read any negative comments.

So we are all in aggreement then. these are the most likely codecs needed to get your encoding mission accomplished.

Encoding? I'm talking about decoding, i.e. playback of stuff you've downloaded.

Hehe, I've seen mentioned in some release group NFO's to use FFDShow for decoding . Also, I dunno about the rest of that thread, but the main post links to the SourceForge while there are later builds out (2005-01-22 might be the latest). Needless features in FFDShow can be turned off.

Which version of XviD codec would it be? Koepi's?

Anywho I use XBMC these days (based on MPlayer). Does the job very well.
