traffic shaping

Most are familiar with what many ISPs are now doing. Throttling, capping, traffic shaping all basically the same thing. My ISP went this route some 7 months ago, I engaged in correspondence with them until this answer was finally received in early Feb. My response is also included. My query relates to whether anything is available which will circumvent deep packet inspection. Encryption as provided by some clients is useless. I am really pissed off paying $50 per month for full service which is only provided for 15 hours per day. For the remaining time download and upload speeds are about 5% of what they should be when using bit torrent sites. The other major ISP in the area not only caps but charges for bandwidth used. I do about 250 GBs per month. Nuff said.

“Thank you for the response I have been patiently waiting for. Long overdue but still very much appreciated. Of course it has now been officially confirmed that Sympatico has grossly violated the basic principles of Net neutrality. Discrimination and the impairment of service for clients sending or receiving legal content will continue unabated should Bit Torrent be the vehicle used. A small price to pay to ensure “… many types of online experiences will be improved…”

How heartwarming. Pay full price for high band but receive only partial service so that others can “benefit from improved service.” At best ethical business practices seemed to have been set aside here. However help appears to be on the way.

Comcast, the second largest American ISP, is under investigation for practices not dissimilar to those being employed by Sympatico. Furthermore Bit Torrent will soon be introducing a new protocol which will effectively render programs such as Internet Traffic Management useless. Again good news for those paying full price for what has become a partial service.

Thank you again though for a tardy but very clear explanation of where Sympatico stands on some very basic issues. We will see what the future holds.”

“You have reached Bell Internet Services, my name is Rajkamal Narla and I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

The phenomenal growth of Internet traffic seen by all the ISPs has been
causing congestion on the Internet. Bell has chosen to reduce the
impact of this congestion by using a combination of increased capacity
and better Internet Traffic Management during periods of peak usage.
This solution will also ensure that all our customers get fair use of
the Internet during these periods. As a result, many types of online
experiences will be improved, such as:

?Real-time? applications like -
Browser Applications
Internet Explorer
Safari
Firefox
Email Applications
Outlook Express
Outlook
WebMail
Instant Messaging
Online Gaming
Internet Radio
Streaming video from YouTube, etc.

As well as ?client-server? download services like -

iTunes
Sympatico/MSN Music Store
Microsoft Windows Update

By better balancing Internet traffic, this solution will help protect
and improve the performance of these common applications for everyone.
Bell uses state-of-the-art technology that will only be active when
Internet traffic becomes congested in order to maximize the ability for
customers to use and enjoy their Sympatico Internet service.

I appreciated having the opportunity in assisting you.”

An inappropriate request to be made in this type of forum or any other for that matter. Just got so vexed at what these arrogant providers get away with. Even declined to disclose the use of traffic manager until early Feb. Anyway matters of personal privacy, the thwarting of competition, and net neutrality itself will be addressed by the bodies responsible for handling such issues. The hope is decisions will be rendered in a timely manner.

I would ask that this thread be closed. Thank you.

Unless you REALLY want it closing I think it will serve as a good thread for discussing these issues, which affect many of our members. Luckily, I'm not one of them, I don't use BT very often.

Oh yeah, nicely written posts as well, it's good to see that some of us use those state provided educations

Right, back on topic... My ISP doesn't traffic shape anyway but if it ever does I'll just love Usenet even more. Sure, I see things hitting private torrent sites just as quickly (if not quicker) than Usenet sometimes but I'd rather just not have the added headache of uploading. Plus, it's more secure and you can't get fucked for "making available"

If you wish to keep it open by all means please do so. The topic does contain imho pertinent issues for many. Also will be taking a close look at Usenet.

I once used torrents but once I got usenet figured out I will never go back.

Torrents are for children, invalids and adults living in their parents basement.

Private trackers, seeding, blocklists, upload ratios are all a complete joke.

The only slight upside to private trackers is that some get access slightly sooner (talking minutes here, not even hours) to some releases. That advantage is negated quickly though when your torrent download speed is trash because the seed ratio is shit.

go and soak up the wisdom

Hardly... Usenet is great but only if you're looking for a recent release or something that has been posted recently. If it doesn't fall within that criteria, you're generally restricted to private trackers to get anything else.

I get my new releases from Usenet now because I don't care about getting releases 90 seconds after they've pre'd but I can honestly say that the rest of my downloads come from private trackers dedicated to music, specific band's bootlegs, kids TV (I have two kids.. honest!), older TV shows and learning material (I'm an IT manager) which would take me a hell of a lot longer to get via Usenet (as you'd either have to request it and see if anyone fills that request or just sit tight and hope somebody posts what you're looking for - both of which can take a lot of time).

Ratios can be a problem but I can honestly say I've never busted a gut trying to maintain a healthy ratio on any of the above mentioned sites.

I know it's personal preference but to say private trackers are a joke is a bit harsh (IMO).

:EDIT: ..oops, back on topic. Traffic shaping is not limited to torrents with BT, they cut my 7.8mb DSL connection (I live like 200m away from the exchange so out of an 8mb maximum, that's not bad) down to 512k every evening from 6pm to 12am so the traffic I'm sending over the link doesn't mean shit!

Rubbery

Do you all buy usenet services? My ISP only allows 2 connections to usenet at any one time and they are capped to something ridiculously slow.

Not that I'm concerned. I don't care about grabbing a release within seconds of pre'ing. I leech off of IRC which suits me pretty much fine. I nearly always max out my 1mbps (WOOHOO! 115K downloads baby) speed on there anyway. And lately there's not even any queue time generally. But I suppose thats more of an indication of the health of the scene rather than anything else?

Another episode in the stirring saga of Ma Bell:

“Bell Canada opens online video store as P2P debate rages on
By Nate Anderson | Published: May 22, 2008 - 12:19PM CT

P2P competition?
Sometimes I get the itch to work in PR. No, it doesn't happen much, but once in a while I see the sort of inexplicable corporate decision that makes me long to have been in the room when it was being discussed. Case in point: yesterday's announcement from Bell Canada that the telecom behemoth was officially launching its downloadable video store... just as Bell is caught up in a government inquiry into its traffic-shaping practices. It's hard to imagine a time at which touting your own downloadable video store makes less sense than when you're on the hot seat for throttling all P2P traffic, much of which competes with Bell to offer video (including entirely legal BitTorrent downloads from the CBC). Yes, you could look worse as a company, but puppies and shotguns would probably need to be involved”.

Full story at: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...-rages-on.html.

Related issues are flaring up nicely in the U. S. as well. Link to full story doesn’t work at the moment but this excerp sums up most matters of import.

“Former Prosecutor: ISP Content Filtering Might be a 'Five Year Felony'
by Tom Brokaw on Fri May 23, 2008 12:18 am
Story: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/20...ontent-f-1.html

"Charter's proposed test of a system that eavesdrops on the URLs its customers visit, in order to serve them targeted ads, has already spurred a powerful Congressman to question whether the scheme would violate the Cable Act. For its part, Comcast's heavy-handed throttling of peer-to-peer sharing by sending fake stop messages to its customers has the Federal Communications Commission holding hand-wringing public hearings over whether it should ban the practice as being inconsistent with its open network principles.

But Ohm thinks the legal quandary is simpler. These schemes all seem to violate the Wiretap Act, a federal statute banning eavesdropping that comes with criminal and civil penalties. That law has some exceptions for service providers to monitor content, but only when necessary to deliver service, or to protect the company's "rights and property."

In fact, Ohm thinks network system administrators could themselves be in legal trouble, just for following orders from their bosses to install monitoring devices.

"Not only is this a five-year felony, it also has individual accountability," Ohm said. "The sys admin could be sued individually and prosecuted individually If you are asked by your manager to go and do this kind of monitoring, you yourself may be legally exposed”.

Story: http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/20...ntent-f-1.html.

All this said it puzzles me that some who have commented view traffic shaping in the UK as something that happens so we do workarounds. Surely there must be a major outcry somewhere. The stakes are too high for it not to be so.

Not to get giddy but no more throttling by Bell Canada. Second day in a row. Is it possible that my more than innocuous thread and posts have something to do with this? Nah. Probably just a glitch.

The vast majority of the stuff I grab is new so usenet is a smash hit for me. I just assumed the op used torrents for new releases which just plain sucks. Back when I was downloading lots of obscure stuff I used ed2k and it worked awesome for the time it lasted. Nowadays private trackers certainly are the best remaining method of retrieving less popular media.
