Admin?

I doubt I'll be inflicting it on my PC for a few weeks yet... I'll let everybody else bug-test it. I'll also need to "modify" my copy of XP to get it to install

i needed a fresh install anyway so i went with Microsoft.Windows.XP.with.Service.Pack.3-ZWTiSO

No problems as of yet. Just installed with one of the keys in the nfo and everything has been running smoothly. Auto update even works.

I've been using the same release for about 3 weeks or whenever it first came out. Works fine, no issues yet, and lets hope it stays that way.

Note: The release was supposedly nuked, but for some bs reason. So if you go to get this, ignore the nuke (if it is in fact nuked on your site or whatever).

I "modified" my XP so well the first time that SP3 just went and did what it was supposed to. Amazing indeed.

As for troubles: Certain AMD OEM (HP, Dell, Gateway, etc...) machines can blow up when rebooting after install due to a painful issue with the way that the OEMs install images to the machines. It is fairly easy to fix, but quite the pain in the ass.

Personal experience: I have seen issues in about 50% of the machines we have installed on (including one that ended up being reloaded). If you aren't sure your machine is in tip top shape and clean of major spyware/viruses it will almost certainly give you grief. I'd certainly almost recommend reapplication of SP2 before you apply SP3 just to stabilize your windows install if you are at all unsure.

Not that I plan on doing so, but can you downgrade to SP2?

Just as with any service pack, you can uninstall it, provided you don't have a slipstreamed copy (as was mentioned above) and don't delete the uninstall files from your windows directory.

Basically, if you install it, you can uninstall it under normal circumstances.

In the same boat. Had the automatic update notification a few days ago; didn't download because I had a feeling I'd have to mess about with WGA patches and so on.

I've now grabbed the latest ETH0 patch, is that all that's needed?

There is no way that sp3 ate 6gigs of anything. its big, but no where near that. the standalone installer is only 540MB.

You had something else going on with your machine. THat is the only explanation. Even in the worse case installs in our IT shop, there have been nothing like you have described here. The machines we do have troubles with had other problems, such as major spyware or virii which left the system unstable to begin with.

And we have never had to reinstall anything on an otherwise healthy system, and I promise that most of my IT staff are running all the warez, porn, and assorted apps that everyone else is. Again, I say, that the only machines we have see issue with have system instability from some other cause.

Please don't think that I don't believe you, but if this is the case, then you have far surpassed the worst case see or heard of.

Admin?

I bit the bullet, patched with the latest ETH0 patch and installed the bugger... PC working perfectly although I can see *NO* differences in the way it operates. I agree with ELJ though, if the PC is a little unstable in the first place, it'll probably get tooled.

I think what we're saying is, if you work in IT you should be able to counteract Microsoft's efforts to fuck your PC

It's love baby!

Did a clean reinstall of XP with SP3 intregrated and so far that particular system seems to be running just fine (did it on one of my less important systems not my main or company's as of yet). With all the different software I run, I expected a hiccup or two but nothing so far.
