Firefox and BBC video

I've been having a problem for the last couple of days viewing streaming video on BBC's website using Firefox.

I start watching a video and after about 45 seconds my connection times out, not just for buffering or slow connection issues, I mean a total time out and disconnect. It wipes out my connection and I have to reset my router to reconnect, it literally shuts down my router. Happens everytime I watch a BBC video, very annoying.

Never had this problem before yesterday and it only occurs with BBC's website, just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.

Admin?

Are you sure it's the router that's having the problem and not the PC killing the connection? Does your router still look like it's online? Next time it happens, instead of restarting the router, go to the command prompt (start>run>cmd (enter)) and try:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

and see if that fixes the connection... It's far more likely that the BBC Kontiki rubbish or something similar is upsetting the PC unless they're streaming some dogshit to you. Another test would be to try Sky or Channel4s online VOD as well cos I think all three use Kontiki.

I have this same problem with bbc iplayer, i try to watch something and about a minute into it, it wipes out my connection. have to power down my router and restart to reconnect.

Its pretty gay but decent bbc shows are usually on usenet about as quick as they get on iplayer so its no hassle. Yet another reason why I won't be buying a tv licence this year.

Are you all on BT Homehub or using a Thomson router?

At least you know the fix... Buy a new ADSL router and you're sorted (or call BT and tell them you know the Thomson box is cunted and you'd like something else... Or change ISP and squirm out of your BT contract because they are unable to provide a working connection)

Just don't mention me ok? BT have had a contract out on me ever since the blue/roxboxing days of the 80s/90s

Getting out of BT contracts is easy. Just complain about their peak hours throttling for heavy users and they tell you like it or lump it. Threatening to cancel used to get the restrictions lifted, now they just tell you they no longer want you.

Changes have been made now though by the look of it. Maybe due to the tit for tat lodging of complaints between rivals - example - but peak hours are still an issue with BT. When on the restricted list my speeds went down to .5 mb between 6pm and 11pm, basically unusable for me. Now they go down to a minimum of 2mb. The downside of this is that my max speed during off peak hours has gone from 8.5mb to 7mb.

Change ISP? O2/Bethere are stupid cheap, stupid fast and don't appear to cap fuck all. More to the point, their customer service is spectacular (I've worked on IT helpdesks, there's is a shining example of how they should be done, I have utmost respect for O2s tech support)
