Bekmambetov (Nightwatch, Daywatch) gets a big up, not necessarily for making the best film of all time, but for making such a smooth transition from Russian film making to English speaking fare.
It's his bread and butter, completely convoluted, massive suspension of disbelief screenwriting combined with his usual brilliant cinematographic style.
He's not alone. Most directors these days are style above substance. Tarantino, 300, you name it. Track down the most ridiculous story you can get your hands on and shoot the crap out of it. Time will tell, but, right now, Bekmambetov has a very strong style hand. If he can find a well written property... look out.
James McAvoy gets a huge up for one of the best American accents in recent years. If you close your eyes you swear it's Shia Laboeuf.
Jolie is, to be blunt, just plain old. She's a good 5 years beyond the hotness factor required for a role such as this. Put a fork in her, cuz she is done.
Overall, I had a blast. As long as you don't try to apply too much common sense to the enterprise, the visual feast is worth the ticket.
