External SATA USB Problem.

Hello everyone. I am a new member here, but have been using VCDQ for sometime, anyways. I live in a technology impaired state. The best connection anyone can hope for where I live is cable internet, which at one time I did have. I had to move; however, and now the best I can get is sadly DSL. Enough pity party for myself now and on to my problem. I had to pay for a digital cable box that was a DVR. I could not use it anymore and decided what the heck lets break it down. I did get some decent components out of it: a SATA cable, 120 gig Maxtor 3.5" harddrive, and some neat power stuff. So then I get an idea, I go to an auction site and buy a cheap SATA USB casing to turn my hard drive into an external. I have windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit and it is picking up the USB mass storage device, but will not install a driver for it to fuction properly. The case came with a drvier disc for Win98 which I have tried to intall, but to no avail. WHat should I do next? I think maybe there is a formating issue? If so, any advice on how to fix it?

I smell fish ???

I've got external hard and DVD drives and none needed drivers either for my xp powered PC or my laptop which has vista ultimate . I built my external hard drive myself and it definitely needed no drivers, problem could be with the hardware in your drive case.
Try locating your drive from disc management in system tools.

GOT IT.

I did think is was funny that in the device manager it was sayig that I didn't have the drivers, but when I clicked on the safely remove hardware icon and looked at the properties of the USB mass data and the hard drive, it said the drivers were fine. So, I then thought it has to be the firmware or formating since I tore it out of a DVR. I look up firmware and hardware for the model of the Maxtor drive which took me to Seagate. I guess they own the Maxtor brand, anyway I found a prrgam there called Maxtor 5 or something and I was right on one of my hunches. It wasn't formatted and this program allowed me to do so. Thanks to those that replied I am a kind of build it myself guy, but I do like help from time to time.
