What type of storage do you use?

Need to get my collection into some sort of order and Don't know whether to go for those book type binders or the metal rigid DJ type cases.

Just interested in other options other that plastic sleeves and spindles!

Binder , easy to find what you want and keeps the discs scratch free, only problem in my house is no-one ever puts anything they've watched back.

Binders are a waste of time, i have a couple of 400 binders and they cant take the weight and the metal clips rip out and am in the middle of switching mine to the metal dj cases

Agreed. Have lost 2 HD's to disc failures now. One with 160Gb's of music, much of it from an underground hh & reggae site, most of which I'll never get back again

Alos lost another with 300Gb's of DVD's/avi's, not so tragic as they were mostly replacable.

I burn everything off to disc and have wallets (320 discs) that I've never had any problems with.

My biggest problem is labelling (too lazy/stoned to write on them when I burn them, so have about 500 discs that need labelling right now) and cataloguing. God only knows what movies I've got, have ended up grabbing and burning the same movies up to 4 times in some instances. I do have cataloguing apps, but most of them require too much work to add movies to.

Thing with binders is if you only got say 200 max in 1 case it isn't so bad but when you got a lot more then bundles of cases arnt so good and the dj boxes are more practical

Have used svp since the cd/dvd change over days had 2 problems in that time, both occasions were bad disks, and both ritek dye dvds when in a hurry they bundled em up in packs of 100 without letting the dye dry properly so sticky disks which ripped the dye off the dvd.
Both times was replaced and damaged picked up same time and both times i was given 100 free ritek disks for free

I have around 15 or so binders that shall be going in the bin as they are well ripped out of the covers

all digital storage solutions basically suck

cd/dvds the foil eventually rots away, the moving aspects of hard drives of course are prone to failure, i read a few articles even questioning the data retention capabilites of solid state disks. tape is slow and expensive by today's standards, needs to be kept in a climate controlled area. Our generation especially (20-somethings and modern teenagers) desperately need to come up with a long term, reliable storage solution with how much of our day to day lives is involved with digital media (photographs, home movies in particular).

If you consider the amount of time and the furstration involved when dealing with cd's / dvd's, I think that using Hard Disks is the best solution ...

Just use a hard disk to download the stuff you need and then use back up disks to transfer the data and keep them offlne.

The only problem comes with music, where one should keep such data on cd's for fast access to different computers.

HDs with backups!

i have 4 externals.
2x1Tb entirely for archived xvids and a backup of my music collection on each drive.
1x500Gb for tvseries.
1x120Gb pocket drive that is only music (for serato/djing).

plus a 300Gb drive in my macbook that has a third backup of my music.

i used to burn like crazy, but i really don't have the time for it anymore. externals plus xbmc ftw. just turn on your hd and bam you have your own VOD service with anything you want.

Something else I forgot to mention was once I'm done with enough discs (watched all the movies) I put them onto a empty spindle (the ones the new ones come on) and then type out a list of the number of each disc on the spindle and the place that on the inside of the cover facing out so you can read it without opening the spindle case. I then number the spindle case on top and then add the movies to a separate Excel list so if I want to go back later and watch a movie from awhile back over again I know exactly where it is. I've got some going back as far as 8 years!
