Upgrading the memory?

My sister has an old Dell Optiplex with a 2.4Ghz processor but only 256mb of RAM. Can anyone tell me how you go about upgrading the memory? She'd only need probably a gig.

I've never done this before. How do you know which memory to get? Where do you buy it? Also you probably need to open up the pc to install it yes?

My sister and I thank you for any help.

Go to the link on memory tool and you use there tool and it will be able to tell which memory her system has and the max you can use for that mobo

Yes you have to open the pc up, best bet is when you get the memory open it up remove the old 256mb stick(pull the clip each side to release the memory) and fill in the slots the new memory, remember which slot you taken from as usually you have to install the memory from the 1st slot 1st then the 2nd, she wont loose any info either as the mobo has a memory chip (looks like a watch battery but bigger)

Then boot it up go to control panel and go to the system and it will show up how much memory you have, obviously if it boots up ok and you can get to the control panel all is good, your just checking to see if all sticks have been accepted and you have pushed the memory in and clicks the clips closed (they hold the memory in place

Memory tool

Ps Ebay is good to get memory from just use a power seller company and pay with paypal, and make sure it's from the uk not Hong Kong

I suspect (I haven't looked up the machine) if she only has 256mb then a) an upgrade won't do a lot for her as the rest of the system will be comparably slow; and b) you may need matched pairs of RAM - the memory checker will indicate this but make sure you follow its advice on buying matched pairs at the correct bus speed.

Alternatively take out a mobile phone contract and get a free laptop, or netbook or whatever they're flogging now.

Went to the crucial website and scanned. Got this:

"Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot"

Not sure what it means

It's a Dell Optiplex GX260 if that helps!
