Vista question

My friend she has an Emachine but the Windows backup disk doesn't work. I think one of the disks is fucked up.

Is it possible to take a downloaded copy and use her original cd key? As long as she uses the same edition it should work right?

::EDIT:: Wrong forum....Oh well. someone can move it to the right forum.

there are unmodified copies floating around however the majority vista copies available for download are pirated 'corporate oem' versions (specifically ones that load fake bios that say the machine is from Dell) that don't even accept a cd key during install, just have to look for a release you're looking for (honestly, microsoft should allow you to download the OS for free once you have the licence - what the fuck is the point otherwise, doubt they do though).

Are there any specific OEM copies that would be better? like an Emcachine OEM disk?

I mean if you can find it sure, but any generic 1:1 vista disc copy would be fine for you, or you could just say screw it and give her the full pirated corp version long as it isn't an audited work machine or something.

*this endorsement to pirate Microsoft operating systems brought to you by GNU/Linux, cause pirated software isn't necessary.

Contact the originator of the machine and see if they will send out another copy of it and use the original key, may cost £10 or so, i know dell do but can't remember how much the replacement is but they ask for the serial number of the machine and the service tag number

The One, The Only

A regular OEM install disk will work. (PROTIP: Dell disks are everywhere as are HP)

With a dell disk, you will have to change the key during activation, HP should ask, but may require key change during activation as well. Use the key off of the side of the Emachine case.

You will have to go to Emachine's support page to gather any drivers that you might be missing after the install, but Vista should install most, if not all, of them automatically.
